Here's another question about 'Conspiracy', which I have posted on the Luftwaffe forum, but which has not been cleared up. Why, in an otherwise historically well-researched film, does Heydrich's Storch have swastikas, instead of the usual balkan crosses, on the upper surfaces of its wings??? On face...

Further to Kevin's answer, for definitive coverage of SD and Sicherheitspolizie uniforms and ranks, see Andrew Mollo's series, 'Uniforms and Insignia of the SS'; it's out of print, but you might be able to find it by doing an online search. In addition to the point made by Kevin, as part of the Reic...

I can't believe that it was a research 'mistake'; I mean whoever owned the Storch was bound to have known what markings a Luftwaffe aircraft would have had, and the research team was good enough to come up with very accurate uniforms and insignia. So, it was either a deliberate decision to use swast...

Heydrich's Storch

In an otherwise seemingly accurately-researched film, 'Conspiracy' (about the Wansee meeting), Heydrich is shown arriving flying a Fiesler Storch, with swastikas on its wings. With such attention to detail on the actors' uniforms, etc., it seems an unlikely sort of mistake to have made with the aero...

According to Andrew Mollo's book on SS uniforms and insignia, with the adoption, by the Waffen-SS, of army-style rank shoulder-straps, there was no need to continue showing SS ranks on the left collar patch. So, for a while, some Waffen-SS units wore their unit insignia on both collar patches. There...

There is no inaccuracy in the picture, which simply reflects his unique choice of insignia --Sepp Dietrich did indeed wear an Army general style cap eagle. Several other things were unique about his uniform, too -for example, unlike other SS generals, his SS-insignia, cap cords (chinstrap), etc., we...

They are very dark images, but the centre image, which seems to have been printed the wrong way around, appears to represent a private in the SS. The early, pre-war, forage cap had a button with a totenkopf (deaths head) embossed on the front, and the SS eagle at the left side of its turn-up (it's j...

`Allo `Allo!

Many people believe that `Allo `Allo! was a comedy about the French Resistance and, therefore, is in bad taste. As one of your respondents points out, it was, in fact, a spoof of 'Secret Army', a serialised drama about a Belgian (not French) escape line, televised in the late `70s. Out of interest, ...

French Gendarmes' Uniforms and Insignia

Somewhat off-topic, but does anyone know where I can find information on the uniforms and insignia of the French Gendarmes from the WW2 period? Our drama group is going to perform `Allo `Allo!, and we need to make up a uniform for the undercover British agent, Crabtree ("Good moaning...").!

If you have access to the actual item, look at its general wear and tear (does it look 60 years' old?), and look for modern materials such as nylon thread, (a drastic test -nylon melts!), etc.

Is a 'First Sergeant' the same as a 'Regimental Sergeant-Major'? Are there, in fact, Sergeant-Majors in the US Army?

Further to Reb's response, I've been interested in military aircraft for 50+ years and don't agree that Allied fighter-bombers have been called 'jabos' "since world war two"....

I know what 'Jabo' means; it is normally used to describe Luftwaffe fighter-bombers. My question is why is the term suddenly being applied to 'Allied' fighter-bombers??? I mean we wouldn't normally use the term 'panzer' to describe Allied armour!
