more details
Hello Maximilian!
Can you give more details about the cylinders you mean? Normally maps were carried in so called "Kartentaschen" which were flat and made of leather.

Metal cylinder
Indeed this was the gas mask container.
It was also very usable for all kinds of other items that a landser wanted to keep dry - after the gas mask had been "lost". It was especially good for writing stuff, matches, cigarettes (when you had them), letters from home...you name it.

... soldiers ever checked to see if they were using their gasmask cannisters for things other than carrying gasmasks?
Could they expect punishment?
Also - were soldiers obliged to have these cannisters with them at all times (even though, I think, gas was never used during the war)?
