Self propelled artillery

Post by P Franzen »

Hello!

I saw some pictures in a book at the local liberary the other day (I do not
remember the title of the book right now).

The vehicles on the pictures were "a Selbsfahrlafette 7.5 cm-Pak 40 cm
auf Fahrgestellt Panzerkampfwagen 38 H(f) and a 10.5 cm Fh 18/40 auf
Geschutzwagen 38 h(f). "

I have never seen or heard of these vehicles before. They must have been
very rare. I'll soon return to the liberary for a closer look, but until then;

How many of these vehicles were built?
Which units used them?
Their performance?

Regards, P Franzen

I think it should be 7.5cm PaK40(Sf) auf 39-H(f) (24 converted) and 10.5cm leFH18(Sf) auf 39-H(f) (48 converted).

These, and many more, conversions were made by a repair unit (name?) under OB West that later formed the nucleus of the re-constitued PzD 21. Many vehicles, especially of various SP Artillery types were used in the East with great success.

Many were also used by PzD 21 itself, and of the types you mention 16 (Sf) PaK 40 and 24 (Sf) leFH18 were used by StuGAbt 200. Have look at http://w1.183.telia.com/~u18313395/norm ... gerob.html for more info. Also look at this very site, http://www.feldgrau.com/afvstats.html, for more info on production numbers.

Kind rgds

It should be 7.5cm PaK40(Sf) auf Geshützwagen 39H(f) and 10.5cm leFH18(Sf) auf Geshützwagen 39H(f) according to the EoGT.

As Nick said, large numbers of captured French tanks were on hand, so similar conversions were made on the Lorraine Schlepper, the Char B-2 and the FCM hulls. Most were used in Normandy.
