Though many allied prisoners died after forced marches to the west and away from the advancing Russians, the majority survived the ordeal and returned to there native countries. Several thousand Allied POW's were released from German captivity only to then fall into Russian captivity, and consequently a substantial number ended up in the Gulag system, where many died before the last were officially released many years after the end of WW2

Thanks Andy. I do know at the pow camp at Luckenwalde, which was liberated by
the Russians, the American sent trucks to bring British and American pows back to
their own lines and the Russians turn them back with a threat to make them
(American drivers in the relief trucks) prisoners of the Russians. The Americans
turn back to their own lines. An agreement was worked out an May 20th that
they (British and American Pows) would be exchange for USSR pows.
I think that they were the lucky ones.
