This is a small site, but gives a nice quick overview of The Great Escape tunnels. I got as far as the tunnel itself before I started getting chills. Mild claustrophobia seems to indicated that I would have been one of the support blokes, staying behind to cover the retreat, as it were.

I know what you mean, it brings me out in a cold sweat as well, just thinking about it.Tom Houlihan wrote:http://www.kerman94.com/tunnelharry.html

Bloody ingenious though wasn't it. Even tapping into the camps electrical circuit to provide themselves with light down there. There was some serious determination there.
Can anybody re-fresh my memory, did any of the escapees actually make it to freedom?

There was a spate of documentaries a while ago on this, including one that took a group of veterans back to the camp location. There, just scattered and rusting among the tress, were still identifiable sections of the tin-can air circulation pipes, just ripped up out of the tunnel by the guards and scattered on the ground. The ultimate souvenir?

You know what?
I have lived in Sagan 1975 - 2003.
There is a museum now, not only about Luft III but all POW camps in area, and last year wa there over 30 000 tourists, mainly from UK, Canada and Australia.
Of course Steve McQueen and Charles Bronson never been in Żagań (former Sagan), but most tourists doesn't care and they are delighted to see this place.
