Post by Thalion »

Hi everyone

Just sorted out my families history and i found a brother of my grandmother who was killed at Djemjansk.
Does anybody know where this place is?
I know its in russia but where?
I would be grateful for every hint.

South of Leningrad (St.Petersburg) in the Heeres Gruppe Nord (Army Group North) sector. A German army Korps was encircled there late 1941 to early 1942.

One of the quickest ways I know of, although mayhap not the most accurate, would be to visit http://www.multimap.com. That will at least show you where the town is, assuming it's still in existence.

Greetings "Thalion" - :D

If Tom's suggestion, above, doesn't work, try this thread:

http://www.mapquest.com/maps/main.adp?countrycode=215

Go to "Russia" in the countries list, then type in "Demjansk" (spelt just like that) in the city box.

If that doesn't work for you, try going direct to this thread:

http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?fo ... y=Demjansk

Tom's http://www.multimap.com will find the location if you type Russia for the country and Demyansk for the city. The Sha-a-dow's http://www.mapquest.com/maps/main.adp?countrycode=215 works if you type Russia for the country and either Demyansk or Demjansk.

Great location finders guys!

Thanks for your fast help. But do you think demjansk is the same as Djemjansk? Notice the j?

@k-pp
The date would fit. He was killed 17.01.1942

Anyone knows which units those where?

Thalion,

Russian words have many transliterated forms. A Russian 'e' is actually pronounced 'ye' (as in 'yet'), hence the confusion about transliterating DEMRAHCK (sorry I've had to write it like this because Feldgrau doesn't seem to support a cyrillic font - you can see how it's written properly in Brian67's link).

So it's pronounced 'Dyemyansk', but the first 'e' in the cyrillic original tricks English writers into writing 'Demyansk'. Since Germans use the 'j' character to pronounce the equivalent 'y' sound of English, a German would write Djemjansk (or Demjansk).

Hope that helps!

Servus,
The Gruppe Eicke, along with Gruppe Simon were the greater portion of the SS TOTENKOPF Division. The 1SS Divsion, I assume you are referring to the Leibstandarte, was nowhere near Demjansk.

1. SS Division was nowhere near Demjansk as Helmut said, the 1. SS Pz Division is the same unit, only that it became a panzer division until much later, in 1941 the 'Leibstandarte' was just a regiment and not a full division.

Thalion - keep us posted on what you find. My Grandfather's brother was flown into the Demyansk pocket as a Totenkopf replacement.
