What's the best way of translating the quote?
The best I can come up with is:

Just think for once how we here on the Volga might finish it off [herunterdrücken ].

Hello Richard,

"herunterdrücken" in this case would be "advance to" or "push to". Just guessing they were discussing the situation on a map... and they would push south... we would say "Push down" (north up, south down).
