Post by Helmut »

Servus,
Can someone tell me what this word means. :? It appears to be some kind of disciplinary offense.

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

"Achtung" in this case means respect. So it is an lack of respect or insult of someone most likely superior.

Herr Awender is correct, Achtungsverletzung can be for example to forget to greet a higher-ranked officer,
or greet in an unappropriate way.

But "not greeting" besides being unpolite and except the eternal law that members of the Luftwaffe never salute first if ever to members of the groundforces, no matter what rank: that is at best disrespectful behaviour. "
"Achtungsverletzung" means: Insult to dignity, which is one level above. The word btw I've never heard during 55 years in Germany.

Here we go: In contrary to the miliary criminal law from 1845 the military law now lets the charge of "Achtungsverletzung towards higher officers" as a a true insubordination paragraph preceed the rules for military obedience (§ 89 MStGB). The charge is fulfilled if the accused during service or by an action during service committs a violation of showing "the necessary due respect" towards higher ranks, by loudly complaining or by refusing to accept a reprehension". The violation of showing this "necessary due respect" during private life time or indeliberately during service time was a simple break of discipline and punished according to the service manual of the army.
