Hello Richard !
My suggestion for the second sentence would be :
Standing on the the street [and after having put down the chest], I felt so light [like a feather],
and I'm firmly convinced that the soldier thought so too.
The text in Square brackets is not literally in the german original, I put it in
to emphasize what might have been the intention of the narrator.
If you ever had the chance to help some friends moving their residence and that friends have
lots of books and have packed their moving boxes filled to the brim with them, you probably know
what he/she is talking about !
