Heer PG division had SPW/Pz Spah Wg

Post by Kelvin »

Hi, it is suprising that the Panzergrenadier Division in the West prior to Ardennes offensive, alway had many SPW in inventory, based upon monthly report on Dec 01 1944, 3rd PG, 15th PG and 25th PG had 67, 21 and 110 operational SPW/Pz Spah Wg. On the other hand, in the Eastern Front, German 10th, 18th and 20th Panzergrenadier Division and In Italy, 29th and 90th Panzergrendier Divisions had nothing. Anyone know why ?

This might help you. I don't know about the units in the Italian theater, but as a result of the Soviet summer offensive the 10th PG,18th PG, and 25th PG were wiped out in the East front during Jul to Aug in 1944. Instead of rebuilding and reforming these divisions Hitler decided to create Panzer-Brigades. The remnants of these Panzergrenadier Divisions were used to create the Panzer-Brigades 105, 106 and 107. The 25th PG Division was rebuilt in Nov 1944 by incorporating Panzer-Brigade 107. The 10. and 18. Panzer- Grenadier-Divisions were also rebuilt in Oct and Dec 1944, respectively. By September 1944 Hitler was committed to an offensive in the west, as early as November, and efforts were made to re-equip those units that would take part in it. Given Germany's limited resources, it might simply have been that they were slighted in this area.
