Correct - Cavite Naval Depot in the Philippines, the "Forgotten Pearl Harbour" of 10th December 1941 that destroyed the USN's biggest forward operating base in the Western Pacific. Only two days before on the 8th a similar series of bombing raids had destroyed Clark Field and about 95% of the combat aircraft of all types that MacArthur had been depending on for the defence of the Philippines.
HOWEVER - you're completely worng on the filmS - plural! - I'd have thought the fact that "In Harm's Way" is Black and White and the first pic is in colour would have ruled that out LOL And The Duke is kinda young there for 1965......oh, and "In Harm's Way" starts with Pearl Harbour, not Cavite!
In fact that's the key to half the film clue...the colour.....
Anyone wat to jump in?

Yep, there's only one pink submarine in movie history...the rest are Yellow LOL A pic of the U.S.S. Balao masquerading as the "U.S.S. Tigerfish" in "Operation Petticoat", with the back nearest the camera being Cary Grant.
And the B&W still is of course Robert Montgomery and Ward Bond - and a supporting John Wayne, who obviously strained himself practising his Vulcan "Live Long and Prosper" - from "They Were Expendable", one of the most emotionally moving of "wartime" propaganda films, though unfortunately W.L. White's bestselling book of the same name of 1942 wasn't finished shooting and released until December 1945.
Both these films kick off with staged recreations of the bombing raids on Cavite, an episode as black in USN history as Pearl Harbour for the effect it had on naval operations - but is scarecely remembered now except as a footnote....though it was the earlier raids on Clark Field that doomed the Philippines. MacArthur's plan was simply to withdraw down the Bataan peninsula - as we all know - and to form a perimeter and wait for the US Cavalry to arrive! BUT the other half of this plan was that US air power in the Philippines would pound the invading Japanese forces every yard they advanced through the Philippines...
Except the raid on Clark Field removed that entire element. Exactly as at Pearl, for security and anti-sabotage reasons he'd approved the concentration of his air assets at Clark in nice orderly rows...all nice and close to each other...and the Japanese air raids of the 8th shattered that whole half of his plan.
Why he THEN continued with a plan that left the US and Philippine armies pinned down in one location and surrendered the rest of the dry land of the Philippines to the Japanese - when he was without the forward striking power of the airforce - only God and MacArthur know now. Or maybe not God....
Your turn, Waleed....

No, what we have in today's modern world is that sometimes the only way certain major historical events don't get consigned to...well...history is that they're either enshrined in some godawful documentary or docudrama with highly inappropriate or inaccurate film footage spliced in...or in various feature films.
For example - how many American schoolkids get taught about the events of the fall of Cuba, 90 miles off their southernmost shore...as opposed to how many have seen The Godfather II? How many know the "full" tale of events around Dealy Plaza...but have seen "JFK"?
The Japanese raids on Cavite and Clark Field are among those nearly "lost" to public consciousness.
Here in the UK this summer, Channel Five is rerunning almost the entire canon of old British war films one by one in the early afternoon. How many kids might have NEVER heard of St. Nazaire...but sat playing with "The Gift Horse" in the background? Or "The Dambusters" before Jackson gets his grubby mitts on it? You wouldn't believe exactly how badly modern history, particularly WWII history is covered in schools now in the UK.

That's exactly what happen when "La,La..land" re-enacts history, what counts is the "dramatiic effect".It has to have a "hero"star in it's credentials, forget about the truth or actual events.Money, money is the name of the game ONLY.
Better none at all, than those gros distortions.
It's considered entertaiment which then allows arti
stic freedoms in their eyes ;D

Fair enough point - but for a lucky few it leaves a memory behind to fester away and drive them on to here or into a book LOL
But also...don't forget there are a few gems out there - I'd suggest you go and look for example at the facts behind "They Were Expendable" - you might be VERY suprised......just sometimes dramatic licence isn't required....
And remember - if it wasn't for all those "bad" films, and poor teaching, and 2nd or 3rd-hand memories - ther average age of members on here would be 80+.....

OK, nearly 400 views later it's time for some more clues.
Mr. X commanded subs, suface ships and more...
The ship posted served two countries in its time...
Senator Chapman*) said "...what the hell is going on here!?" about X in the movie...
Something major connects X to the movie - and YES Pearl Harbour plays a major role too (for both... in the movie)!
Next 100 views will give a bonus picture... if it lasts so long
- but be careful, not everything posted is the truth!
Good hunting!
