South of Ladoga Lake - Winter 1943.

Post by tigre »

Hello to all :D; here goes a little new story...........................

Great Russian offensive in the north.

On January 12, 1943 the Soviets launched the Second Battle of Lake Ladoga, supported by a hurricane of fire unleashed by four thousand five hundred guns. In both sectors of the German corridor, south of Schlüsselburg, broke a barrage of fire that lasted up to one hundred forty minutes.

Then came the assault from the east, the divisions of the Soviet 2nd Shock Army of Lieutenant General Romanowski. At the same time attacked jumping from the West, the five infantry divisions and the armored brigade of the Soviet 67th Army of General Duchanow.

With a double pincer movement, the Soviets sought to restore the land connection to Leningrad. After that, the attack would continue south of the Kirow railroad. General Duchanow advanced with his divisions against the weak defensive positions of the 170. ID.

The 86th Rifle Division attempted to wrap and encircle Schlüsselburg by its flank, advancing across the frozen Neva river. The Soviet soldiers came under concentrated fire from the German grenadiers. The frozen river was full of wounded. The MG 42 (model 42 machine gun, air-cooled, gas operated recoil, rate of fire: 1500 rounds per minute, length: 1,22 m, Weight: 11.6 kg, metal construction. For its terrible rate of fire this weapon was called by the soldiers "bone saw" sowed death among the attackers' waves, generating horrific casualties. The attack had to be stopped.

The 45th Guards Rifle Division under General Krasnov, tried to break on the southern ring road. There was defended the GR 399 commanded by Oberst Griesbach (Franz Griesbach decorated as Mayor with the Knight's Cross on March 14, 1942. As Oberst and 242 º German soldier with the oak leaves, on March 6, 1944 as 53rd German soldier and in charge of the 170th ID with the swords). But Oberst Griesbach's soldiers beat back the enemy in close combat.

Great Russian offensive in the north.

But at Marino, on the boundary of the II. / GR 401 and the AA 240, the Russians managed to open a gap after four waves of assault and suffering about three thousand KIA. Then came the fifth wave of assault with tanks T-34, the first was lost in the treacherous ice of the Neva but others went ahead and reached the German lines firing explosive shells and machine guns. The Hauptmann Irles (II. / GR 401) fell in action but by Gorodok the Pi Btl 240 (Maj. Schulz) and the remnants of the AA 240 (both units totaling around 300 men) retained their position.

Oberstleutnant Kleinhenz, Commander of the GR 401 tried in vain to block the irruption and was wounded during the attempt, along with his Adjutant. Now the Soviet Rifle division deployed in Schlüsselburg impacted on Marino. The Soviet 67th Army has managed, through a flank attack, to push against Dubrowka and Gorodok, opening the way through the frozen peat towards Ssinjawino heights on the south side of the German bottleneck along the Kirow railway.

Great Russian offensive in the north.

The Second defensive Battle of Lake Ladoga was on the razor's edge. Generaloberst Lindemann, Commander of the 18 AOK knew what this Soviet breakthrough meant. The picture of the situation on the evening of January 12, 1943 showed that the enemy already fought in Marino with four rifle divisions and one armored brigade and from there could move on the bottleneck in order to join the Soviet divisions advancing from the east and then could pivot southwards.

The "Watzmänner" are there thought Generaloberst Lindemann. The "Watzmänner" were the men of the 96. ID commanded by Generalmajor Noeldechen deployed around Ssinjawino with the remnants of its three regiments of grenadiers. The division commander had at his disposal only half of their forces. That night of January 12, 1943, the 96. ID was ordered to attack northwestward from their assembly area in order to reject the enemy back to the Newa by mean of a counterattack.

Great Russian offensive in the north.

Generalmajor Noeldechen had at his disposal only five battalions of grenadiers. Also came a group of Flak Regiment 36 with 88mm guns Flak 18/36/37 L/56 adapted as anti-tank guns and greatly feared by the enemy (tube length: 4.93 m; Vo 820-840 m / s; range: 14 860 m; height: 11000 m; Weight: 5000 kg; Weight of the shell: 14.7 kg; projectile Weight: 9 kg. The "eight - eight" had been improved in 1941 as Flak 41 and used as Pak (tube length: 6.55 m; Vo: 1020 m / s; Range: 19,700 m) and four tanks "Tiger" Pz Kw VI belonging to the 1. / schw. Panzerabteilung 502 commanded by Oberleutnant von Gerdtell. Also were included eight Pz Kw III as escorts. The fight was about to begin.

The 96. ID advanced with the GR 284 on the right (III. / GR 284; I./GR 287 and II./GR 284) and with the GR 283 on the left (III./GR 283 and II./GR 283). At 9:30 hours those five infantry battalions attacked through the snow and the woodland. This caused difficulty in maintaining the liaison between the battalions.

Great Russian offensive in the north.

Around noon, the so-called ring road west of the Scheidies forest, was reached and then surpassed by the II./GR 284 and the I./GR 287 after sustaining heavy fightings with enemy infantry and tanks.

At the request of Oberst Pohlman (GR 284) eight German tanks rolled into the ring road, and decided the fight in the southern end of the swamps of Beljajewskoje. In this fighting fell in action Leutnant Kiesewetter, leader of the 2./GR 287, Leutnant Kruger, leader of the 4./GR 287 and Oberleutnant Honig, Commander of the 8./GR 284, three other officers were wounded in the three battalions.

While Oberst Pohlman, went to the ring road in order to lead the fight in person, his regimental CP received a heavy air attack. The undisputed leader of the cyclist Platoon of GR 284, Oberleutnant Stahlhut and 23 other men of his fraction and the HQ of the regiment were killed in action.

Great Russian offensive in the north.

On January 13, 1943 the division ordered, during the night from 13 to 14 January, engaged the I. / GR 287 to the right of the III. / GR 284 in order to counter the deep enemy penetration towards the P5 and to establish liaison with the GR 374. However the 96. ID was no longer able to carry out offensive actions and had run out of reserves.

On January 14, 1943 was engaged the Pi Btl 196 (Maj. Renz) which first received the order to attack towards the P5, but then was ordered to defend the Ssinjawino Heights. The battalion was reinforced by the II. / GJR 100 (5 Geb Div) and the II. / AR 227. In the epic defense Maj. Renz earned the title of the "Lion of Ssinjawino" and the brave Commander of the 3. / Pi Btl 196, Leutnant Niemann, won the Knight's Cross.

Hello to all :D; last part...........................

Great Russian offensive in the north.

The Maj. Märker had been wounded and Hauptmann Wollschläger took over the schw. Pz Abt, the Pz Kw III had been almost annihilated, Leutnant Petz fell in action and Oberleutnant Ebert lost one of his legs; a total of 17 crew members of the Pz Kw III had been killed.

But despite the heavy casualties suffered by the defenders, the Soviets were unable to reach the target: the Kirow railway line with the important railway junction at Mga. However, on January 18, 1943 they announced by radio the break of the Leningrad's siege.
