Those are mountain boots. Note the Heer Edelweiß patch on his right arm?

The Unterscharführer is wearing a normal tunic. It`s a Gebirgsjäger: http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/Gli ... rung-R.htm . IC 2nd shows that he had seen combat.

If this is a Heer Edelweiss on an SS guy he could be Legion Wallonie (it was still a Heer unit at this time) as a sign of outstanding service with the 97th Jäg div the Wallon Causcasian Veterans were awarded the privilage of wearing the Edelweiss on there caps and on the right arm .the veterans still wore the Edelweiss Heer patern when the Legion Wallonie was transferd to the Waffen SS
BuT I would say that this is a SS pattern Edelweiss as the Unterscharführer has SS runes he would be a Member of SS Nord the only SS Gebrigs Div that were alowed to wear Runes .

Hello Franz,

You might be right and it could be the SS version of the Edelweiß. When I first looked at the image, I thought I saw the entwined rope border of the Heer badge, but now I'm not certain.
