German soldiers are 'too fat to fight' Taliban because they drink so much (while our boys go dry)

They drink too much and they're too fat to fight, that's the damning conclusion of German parliamentary reports into the country's 3,500 troops stationed in Afghanistan.
While British and U.S. troops in the country face a strict ban on alcohol, their German comrades are allowed two pints a day.
The stunning statistics reveal that in 2007 German forces in northern Afghanistan drank 1.7million pints of beer and 90,000 bottles of wine.
The troops also downed 896,000 pints of beer in the first six months of this year, the Times reported.
German soldiers prepare for a mission in Kabul. Last year Bundeswehr forces in northern Afghanistan drank 1.7million pints of beer and 90,000 bottles of wine
The statistics only add to the embarrassment of the country's federal army, Bundeswehr, after a report earlier this year found troops to be too fat, smoked too much and didn't exercise enough.
It showed they lived on beer and sausages while shunning fruit and vegetables.
The parliamentary report claimed that some 40 per cent of all German army personnel are overweight - a higher percentage than in the civilian population.
At the time Reinhold Robbe, the parliamentary commissioner for the armed forces, stated: 'Plainly put, the soldiers are too fat, exercise too little, and take little care of their diet.'
The Times also reported the damning allegation from a senior officer that Germany is failing in its main mission to train the Afghan police. He descibed the efforts as 'a miserable failure'.
Since 2001, 28 German soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan.

Sebastian - it might be worthwhile remembering exactly WHY the British and Americans ban alcohol; it's not for want of the transport/logistics capacity...this is AFGHANISTAN...While British and U.S. troops in the country face a strict ban on alcohol...

Hi Phylo,
Don't quite get it. It's OK to kill Afghanies, as long as you don't offend their sensibilities by having a quiet drink and a pork sausage????? No bloody wonder the Taliban are winning they have no such scruples/weaknesses. As to training the police in Afghanistan. Why would you bother training/feeding/housing/paying your past/present and future enemy?

Re: too fat to fight
1/ the forces in Afghanistan are trying to defeat ONLY the Taliban....not the average Afghan citizen. Alienating those non-Taliban-supporting Afghans by choosing to break their various religious taboos intentionally looks like complete lunacy to me.
2/ because in a future Afgahnistan with the Taliban defeated (ideally) the people being trained WON'T be the enemy.
Hans, that on earth do you think the various nations fighting inAfghanistan are actually DOING??? Just killing allcomers???

Re: too fat to fight
The fact that the consumption of alcohol is against local Islamic law? You'd condone people in the country specifically to HELP the locals being allowed to break local laws?at least let them have a few beers in private.
It would need to be STRICTLY private and not with locals' knowledge. And the German contingent hasn't proven the most...discreet?
If the PRESS knows it - the locals do. So it's too late.

Re: too fat to fight
What are they doing in Afghanistan you ask. Getting themselves killed due to their moronic governments not unleashing them nor even providing security for their supplies in Pakistan.
As for the Taliban/Afghans being defeated, pigs might fly [oops, not over Afghanistan]. You can't win a war by @#% footing around and being afraid of stepping on a few toes. If the alies were fair dinkum Afghanistan/Iraq should by now just be a distant memory of a place somewhere in time.
& pork sausages über Alles.

Re: too fat to fight
They are there with a VERY limited remit, and breaking the local religious laws is NOT among them. if the German contingent is so stupid or uncaring as to not pay attention to what's going on around them, that's yet another reason not to let them outside their national boundries bearing arms

Re: too fat to fight
Hello Gents:
I suppose alcohol restrictions are OK, but having known a few Muslims in my time, I am sure a few of them are drinking on the sly as well. When I saw a Muslim friend of mine drinking alcohol at an evening soiree, I asked him if it was not against his religion to drink alcohol; he replied yes it was if Allah happened to see one doing it, but he had it on good authority that Allah has very poor night-vision
A friend of mine in the USAF flew into Riyadh some years back and as soon as the plane came to a halt it was searched by Saudi soldiers for contraband such as porn mags, alcohol, etc. The plane was clean except for one of the crew's jackets which had a "Sears" label inside of it; it was confiscated and never returned due to its "Jewishness". Sometimes having respect for one's Allies' sensibilities is carried a little far

Re: too fat to fight
The problem is - the "current" struggle in Afgahnistan between the national government and the Taliban which the Allies have gotten embroiled in is BETWEEN two stains of severe orthodoxy So sensitivities are likely to be pretty sharp...

Re: too fat to fight
This is not just ridiculous, it is ABSURD!!
So the (German) soldiers can't have a drink, because they violate local/religious rules???
BOOhoohoo....
It is not that muslims around the world have the best reputation of adepting to local/religious rules elsewhere, do they?
And yes, many of those muslims do enjoy a drink or 2.
what's next??
Should we cover up the female soldiers with burka's?
Abolish christmas and easter??
These men and women are there risking life and limb each day to help others, so I say they deserve a beer and a saucage! Hell, they should have a frikkin' barbecue each day, for all I care.
As long as they don't do it in public places and with moderation.
Plus it is common knowledge that soldiers act up when being on duty for any length of time, whether they are German, Dutch, British or American. It's called letting of steam!
We should stop being so damn politically correct and smell the coffee!
The fact that they get fat and out of shape on the other hand, is shamefull to say the least though and should be acted against. They need their fitness to perform and do their job properly.

Guys!
They are to fat to fight. Maybe they drink less than we did 30 years ago, but they are powerful eaters. Is there no drill-seargant available? Please Brits send one or several dozends.
