Kragenspiegel of the Waffen SS

Post by panzermahn »

Hi all,

I am grouping information relating on kragenspiegeln (collar patches) besides the double Sig runes intended for the units of Waffen SS. Some of the collar patches were either just drawing board project or were manufactured but not worn. Since the double sig runes kragenspiegel is the main collar patch insignia of the Waffen SS, therefore I didn't not touch on it. Most of the units mentioned below somehow did used the Sig runes

Divisional Level

1. 3rd SS Division Totenkopf = Totenkopf collar patch (horizontal/vertical version, worn at both sides of the collar early in the war)
2. 5th SS Panzergrenadier Division Wiking = Wiking ship bow (manufactured but no evidence that it was worn)
3. 7th SS Volunteer Mountain Division Prinz Eugen = Odal rune (Were seen to be worn on both sides of the collar, however it's not a common practice)
4. 13th Waffen Mountain Division of the SS Handschar (1st Croatian) = Scimitar and Swastika
5. 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS Galizien (1st Ukrainian) = Ukrainian lion & Trident of Vladimir (extremely rare and believed to be worn when members of the SS Division Galizien were transitioned to UPA)
6. 15th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (1st Latvian) = Fire cross collar patch & Double-arm swastika (designed by Himmler himself intended for KL auxilliaries, however some were mistakenly provided to few Latvians personnel)
7. 18th SS Volunteer Panzergrenadier Division Horst Wessel = S (using the single Sig rune) + A monogram(no evidence of being manufactured or worn. However Gordon Williamson's Waffen SS Handbook stated that it is the collar patch for this division. Most likely it is a projected insignia only)
8.19th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (2nd Latvian) = Flaming sun with 3 stars & Double-arm swastika (designed by Himmler himself intended for KL auxilliaries, however some were mistakenly provided to few Latvians personnel)
9. 20th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (1st Estonian) = Estonian armored arm with sword and E (had a couple of versions)
10. 21st Waffen Mountain Division of the SS Skanderbeg (1st Albanian) = Goat's Head Helmet (manufactured and seem to be worn for a short while. No photographic evidence of it being worn)
11. 22nd SS Volunteer Cavalry Division Division Maria Theresia = Cornflower
12. 23rd Waffen Mountain Division of the SS Kama = sunflower (most probably a projected insignia since this division exists less than 6 months)
13. 23rd SS Volunteer Panzergrenadier Division Nederland = Wolf's Hook (vertical = Dutch version, horizontal = official German version)
14. 24th Waffen Mountain (Karstjäger) Division = Karst flower (Dr. Marco Novarese mentioned about it. No evidence that it was manufactured or worn. Most likely a projected insignia)
15. 25th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS Hunyadi (1st Hungarian) = Letter H (not all personnel received it) or blank black patch
16. 26th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (2nd Hungarian) = Letter H (not all personnel received it) or blank black patch
17. 27th SS Volunteer Grenadier Division Langemarck (1st Flemish) = Trifos rune (was also worn by members of the Freikorps Danmark for a short while)
18. 28th SS Volunteer Grenadier Division Wallonien = Usually SS runes, however a number of volunteer refugees worn the Cross of Burgundy spiegeln (soldbuch photos from Rikmenspoel and Eddy de Bruyne's book For Rex and For Belgium showed that the Cross of Burgundy were worn)
19. 29th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (1st Russian) = St George's Cross (no photographic evidence of it being worn)
20. 29th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (1st Italian) = SS runes on red background (worn during the early formation of the unit and before the battle at the Anzio beach head), fasces on black background (were manufactured at Dachau but was not worn)
21. 30th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (1st Belarussian) = Double cross of St Euphrosyne (on red or black background. no evidence of it being worn)
22. 33rd Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS Charlemagne (1st French) = Jean of Arc collar patch (projected insignia only), SS or blank black patch
23. 34th SS Volunteer Grenadier Division Landstorm Nederland = Flaming grenade (originates from the Landwacht NEderland)
24. 36th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS = Crossed rifles and a stick grenade

Training Company of Freikorps Danmark = Danish flag collar patch (for a short while)
Flak Battalion of the Charlemagne Division = Celtic Cross collar patch (possibly a projected version only)
Ostturkischen Waffen Verbande der SS = Wolf's head collar patch (manufactured but no evidence of being worn)
Indische Freiwillige Legion der SS = Bengal Tiger Head collar patch (very rare)
Kaukischer Waffen Verbande der SS = Sword and Shield collar patch (possible projected insignia only)
Standarte Nordwest = Trifos Rune

1st Battalion of the 29th Italian SS Division = 3 arrows and yoke (worn by only a few personnel, designed by Ostuf Graf Pio Ronconi)
Romanian SS Regiment = Iron guard symbol collar patch (no evidence of it being worn), Nails and crossed irons (no evidence of it being worn)
Bulgarian SS Regiment = Bulgarian Lion collar patch (no evidence of it being worn)
Armenian/Caucasian/Azeri SS units & Druzhina SS Brigade = Kindzjal collar patch (possibly only a projected insignia)
