South Africans in Luftwaffe

Post by seendcleeve »

In Eric Browns book"Wings on my Sleeve"

he states he flew a JU88 out of Ireland in 1945

This plane had flew there from Denmark on May 5th 1945

The Pilot Herbert Gieseke claimed he was South African and had been forced to return to fight for Germany by the Gestapo operating in ex-German colonies.

I would assume that the colony was Namibia but did many or any South Africans fight with the Luftwaffe or would he technically be German

Sounds a bit suspect, the Gestapo operating in ex-colonies.... Namibia and Botswana (ex German SW Africa) were administered under British mandate.

Perhaps he came from former colonies administered by the French.... Togo & Cameroun?
But he'd be unlikely to call himself South African from up there?

Hello Gentlemen!

Here's a link to a thread that discusses RKT from the former German colonies in Africa...
