Pz.Regt.'Hermann Goering' 1945

Post by donwhite »

I've come across information on Pz.Regt.'Hermann Goering' that states that the II./Abt. was largely absent during 1945 (rebuilding) and that the remaining I./Abt. was a mixed 4 company battalion made up of 2 companies each of Pz.IV's & Pz.V's. The one piece of data missing was when this arrangement actually came into being. Can anyone confirm whether this was the status quo prior to the Soviet January Offensive (12th Jan'45) or a direct result of it. Any help is much aprreciated.

Cheers

Panzer Regiment HG

Post by Kamen Nevenkin »

 Both PzAbt'n of PzR HG were present during the Soviet
January Offensive(1945). This PzR had been organized
in typical way - I.(PzV) and II.(PzIV)Abt. On 15.01.45
the follwing strenght was reported by this Regiment:
45 PzV(38 operational), 35 PzIV(27 operational) and
3 BefPzIV. The regiment lost almost all of its tanks
during the retreat battles in Poland and Silesia. On
1.03.45 it had only 5 PzV.

On 28.2.45 an order was issued for withdrawal of II.Abt.
It was to be sent to Grafenwoenr training ground for
recreation. This Abt was never sent back to the Division.
On 22.4.45 it was sent with 20 PzV to PzAOK 1 operational
area. The Abt fought there until the and of the war under
the name PzAbt HG.

During March 45 I.Abt was organized as gem.PzAbt with two
PzIV Kp and two PzV Kp. On 7.3.45 it received 20 PzIV and
between 7.3 and 17.3.45 - 21 PzV. On 12.3.45 PzD HG reported
the following strenght: 20 PzIV, 21 PzV and 1 PzVI.

Have a nice day.
