1183 Pz-Jagd-Kp

Post by donwhite »

I have a few queries on this unit. Looking through a copy of a Pz.Jag Lage for 30/12/44-15/01/45, there is a mention of a '2./Pz.Jag.Abt.741' that was present with Army Group Centre during this time frame. From other readings, the 2nd Company apparently did not refit with its parent unit in the latter half of 1944 nor transfer to Western Front. Further it became at some stage '1183 Pz-Jagd-Kp'. Was there a parent unit for this redesignated company (a Pz-Jagd-abt/bde?). When did the redisignation take place? Any help is most welcome.

Cheers

Partial Answer

Post by Ron Klages »

Don,

I have the following but it is very incomplete.

I believe it was being formed up at Milowitz and was destined for the 83. ID. However the 83. ID was essentially destroyed in the fighting in Kurland and in January 1945 the remnants of the division were transported to East Prussia fighting there to the end. As a result PJKp. 1183 was not able to join the division. I suspect the they were assigned to the 6.ID that was being formed from the 6.VGD that was decimated fighting on the Vistula. The reformed 6.ID went to fight in Bohemia from March to the end.

Not much but this may trigger some others that can add, correct, etc.

best regards,

Mysterious ramblings over 2./741

Post by John Nelson »

Hey Guys
The story of the H.Pz.Jg.Abt.741 is pretty complicated. First the story of Pz.Jg.Kp.1183:
On July 17 '44, the 83.Inf.Div. was ordered to send a Pz.Jg.Kp.(mot.Z) to Mielau, in order to re-equip with Sturmgeschuetz. The Offensives on the E.Front delay the carry out of the order, and the order was modified on Sept.6.44, when the Stamm (cadre) for the was ordered to go to Burg, instead of Mielau. The Kp. was equipped with StuG IV, and on Oct.26.44 was ordered to be sent to, and be integrated with the K.Gr.20.Pz.Div. in H.Gr.Mitte. 2 days later this order was modified, and the Komp. was ordered to return to its home Div. On Oct.30.44, the Komp. was sent from Burg to Libau, to return to the 83.Inf.Div. in H.Gr.Nord.
On Jan.2.45, the Kp.1183, was ordered to to refit in Milowitz, and be re-equipped with Jagd.Pz.38, the Kp. left its remaining StuG IV with other units in Kurland, and arrived in Milowitz on Jan.6.45
Urgent orders from 8.Feb.45 called for the Stab, Stab Kp., and 1183 to Goerlitz under H.Gr.Mitte and incorporated to an Inf.Div. without a Pz.Jg.Abt. When the Pz.Jg.Abt.183 arrived it was subordinated under the 6.Volksgren.Div. When the Pz.Jg.Kp.1006 was ready,on Mar.20.45, it was sent back to the 6.Volksgren.Div, and attached to the Pz.Jg.Abt.183, thus forming a kinda of gepanzerte Kampfgruppe.

H.Pz.Jg.Abt.741

On Sept.1.44, the H.Pz.Jg.Abt.741 was ordered to disband, and provide a Kp., and Stab to form the Pz.Jg.Abt.1564 w/ Pz.Jg.Kp.1564.
On Sept.4.44 orders were cut and the previous order was cancelled, they now called for the 2.Kp./741 to be directly subordinated to the OKH, and it was to be replaced by renaming the Kp.1376.
Orders from Sept.9.44 called for the 741 to be ready for deployment by 18.Sept.44, (w/o 2.Kp.(neu)). The new 2.Kp. was to be deployed for anti-partisan duties in Slovakia, and was to be ready to ship by 12.Sept.44
However, PE 1376 (2./741 neu) wasn't sent to Milowitz to be equipped with Jagdpz.38 until Sept.18.44, so Anti-Partisan deployment was not possible. Finally, on Nov.1.44, after the rest of the 741 was sent to the W.Front, the 2./741(neu) was ordered to be sent to rejoin the Abteilung.

(What happened to 2./741(alt)?)

On Sept.21.44, 1.Kp./741(2./741(alt)?) was ordered to Festung Loetzen, and be subordinated under the city's "Festung Kdr." However, on Oct.20.44, orders were cut for the immediated transport of the Kp. to Loetzen with the Pz.Jg.Kp.1337.
To date, I haven't found any orders calling for the 1./741 to be attached to the 83.Inf.Div.
Finally, on Mar.29.1945, since the 1183 hadn't returned to the 83.Inf.Div., the 1./741 was officially redesignated as "Pz.Jg.Kp.1183."

A preview, of what Martin Block and I are working on.

Thanks John & much appreciated.
Very informative & every bit as complex as the PzJag.Abt 510 Story.
