~recommended movies~
wow recommended is a big word, aye~ I thought we all may have a general good sense in movies, and why not ask for some suggestions. My recommendation is "The Battle Of Algiers", so far it is excellent, and strikingly similiar to the Iraq conflict.

First saw Battle of Algiers in the early 1970s...
Last year I read that the Pentagon theater was showing Algiers and some in the Defense Dept was recommending that all hands on deck see it to get a feel of what urban warfare in Iraq is like.
A neighborhood theater that specializes in the offbeat, avant garde, and counter culture cinema ran Algiers for a week. I went to see it and it play as well and as relevant as it did over 30 years ago.
Be you on the Left or Right, I recommend Algiers. Just watch out if a stranger sitting next to you offers some pop corn.*
* If you don't get the pop corn remark, I will explain it.

Obviously there are some similarities with iraq. However, Algeria was more simple. Old colonial force v.s. vague independence force. Iraq is more of a conflict between sunni and shia, with USA, who is genuinely trying to create a democracy and leave. No colonial ambitions, anyone who says that is full of sh*t. It's a nice piece of realestate, but it goes agianst our core values. It's understandable that some, especially over there could be confused about that, but we are only losing money, men, not taking anything!

Lost Command: Vietnam & Algeria theme movie
No classic, but decent historical drama type entertainment over cocktails. French soldiers survive Dien Bien Phu only to end up in Algeria.
Strangely enough, I saw this movie at a Marine basecamp in Vietnam just days after arriving there in Dec 67. Who ever picked this movie to show us in that setting had a sense of dark humor, I thought.
Yes, Battle of Algiers is not fully or even closely analogous to Iraq. But I sense the reason the management of the Pentagon in-house theater chose this movie was to give the super REMFs of the DoD a feel for what was going on on the streets of Iraq.

Touch of Evil (restored Orson Welles version, not studio edition)
Anyone see "Dersu Uzala" by Akira Kurosawa in 1975. Based on true memoirs. Hunter guides russian soldiers through siberia in early 20th century. I have it, but have not viewed yet, looks excellent~

I thought I knew my acronyms. What is PACVN? North Viet Army went by a different acronym.
