LOOKING FOR GOOD STRATEGIC WAR GAME.

Post by Shadow »

Hello Troops!

Can anyone suggest a good WWII (European Front) Strategic War Game- at the Divisional and upward level?
I'm not interested in moving little men and tanks around and pretending to go "bang bang".
I once had "The Ardennes Offensive", which I played for days on end, and totally enjoyed! Ran across a free download of it recently but it was only for Windows 95 + 98 and I have XP.

Your assistance is greatly appreciated!

Best regards -

Hi Shadow,

Are you talking about computer games or board games?

Computer games, Richard :D

Figured after all those years of playing Avon Hill board games I should be able to pamper myself now in my "old age"!

1) Have you tried playing it on XP anyway?
2) Where did you find it?

Panzer General 2 (Though, admitedly, not a "divisional level and above" game.) runs on XP (I'm stuck at Starya Russa!!).

Hi Henrik -

Yes, I've spent the last 5 1/2 hours trying to get the d..mn thing to work!
The cats hiding under the bed - the wife has left in a huff - the neighbours are complaining about my screaming - and I expect the police any minute!
I JUST CAN'T SEEM TO GET IT TO WORK!!!!!
Even using the "compatibility wizard" - which keeps telling me it should work!!!!!
Downloaded the copy direct from the manufacturers - SSI.

best -

p.s.- if you don't here from me for awhile it means I jumped off a bridge or something! - da..mn computers!

How about Operational Art of War I?
There's also an updated version: A Century of War, which covers the years 1900 to 2000.

At least I've enjoyed this really much. There's plenty of scenarios from WWII and also from WWI and more is coming constantly from the players.

Great game, with the only downside that it's hard to find from shops anymore as it's a quite old game. Although the Century of War edition was released in 2000 and with luck you might find it.

The best is Blitzkrieg. Most based on artilery and tank battles. And the infantry is just cannon fodder :P This game is sure realistic too. Try it!

Oh yeah. Soon there will be an expansion pack out to ;)

Hello "The Fighting Egg":
( :D - there's gotta be a story behind that name? - )

Thanks for the tip!
I seem to remember playing Blitzkrieg as a board game, way back before Bill Gates invented the computer, and it was quite entertaining!
Will see if I can hunt up computer copy.

Operational Art of War (Century of warfare) -- TOAW is the best I know!

See http://www.warfarehq.com and see the TOAW section for places to buy...

(Generally it looks like the TAO...
