Along with musician/composer Hoagy Carmichael, seeing the need for trained war pilots, Stewart teamed with other Hollywood moguls and put their own money into creating a flying school in Glendale, Arizona which they named Thunderbird Field. This airfield trained more than 200,000 pilots during the War, became the origin of the Flying Thunderbirds, and is now the home of Thunderbird School of Global Management.

Gerry's brother Lionel was trained at Thunderbird Field...

The show's title derived from a letter written to his family by Anderson's older brother, while he was serving in the United States during World War II. In the letter, he referred to an American Air Force base called "Thunderbird Field".

The big movie screencapture is from the 1943 movie..."The Flying Thunderbirds!" recently digitally remastered and re-released by Fox...and from which the legendary USAF "Flying Thunderbirds" takes its name - founded at next-door-neighbour Luke AFB in 1953

Gerry Anderson was too young to see service in the war by two years, though later called up for two years' National Service in the RAF in 1947. But he never forgot the glitzy-sounding "Thunderbird Field" from his brother's letter home...

Okay - a simple one now...

A US Marine aviator, a six-time winner of the Distinguished Flying Cross, and holds the Air Medal with 18 Clusters, he flew 59 combat missions in the Pacific, especially in the Marshall Islands. But he ALSO had a significant postwar flying career in Korea...the puzzle is - what does it say on his aircraft behind him?

Senator and Mercury/Shuttle astronaut John Glenn - who many people forget had a succcessful Naval Aviation career in WWII before his Korean service.

And it was very hard finding a pic of him with so much hair!!!
