Iraq fighting, May 1941

Post by Enrico Cernuschi »

Hello, I didn't know about German "troops" fighting with the Iraq Army against the Anglo-Indian brigades. All that is generally quoted is a Luftwaffe help (a mixed Squadron force, with 14 Bf110 and 5 He111, not to mention some transports) and a Regia Aeronautica one (11 FIAT CR 42 and a Radio command S.81 with some transports). The Italians sent too some Breda 20/65 ack ack and anti-tank guns but they were manned by the Iraqis with the help of Italian instructors. Bye EC

Hi 352vgd,

I can only offer you a rather vague lead. I have seen a book on the Brandenberg special forces that includes information on their attempts to organise Iraqi resistance to the British invasion. However, I am not a special forces devotee and I took no details. In any case it appeared to be rather unreliable in a number of better known areas and I would not put too much faith in it.

You might try posting a new thread titled something like "Brandenbergers in Iraq, 1941?" to get more details.

Cheers,

Sid.

This might help

There's an interview with an Afrikakorps Infantry Veteran
on the main page of feldgrau which deals with the Brandenburgers

Also

try this book review which also deals with Sonderverband 287 and 288
and these units plans/operations in the middle east.
