The tattoo could be a good idea if it saved time and didn´t reveal the enemy your identity, but it wasn´t the reality, although Anthony Beevor in his book about Berlin battle stated that the russians didn´t know anything about the tattoo until six months since the war was over.

Why didn't someone come out with a better way to identify a soldier's blood group for the W-SS men?
You could just avoid the tattoo altogether. How about getting sick? I know a veteran who avoiding getting the tattoo, since he got sick whilst they were being tattooed. It really helped, since being in the infirmary probably saved his life when he got back to Yugoslavia.
