In German slang, "Birne" can mean your head, but I'm not sure whether that would apply in your context.

I don't really mind the new US Army berets that much. We still have the patrol cap for the field and other occasions as authorized, and the beret is practical for garrison wear since you can roll it up and stuff it into your belt or cargo pocket when entering a building. You don't have to worry abou...

I think your best bet would be to contact the Hagen city archives, if the town has a city archives or city historical society. Most of these places do not have any records available online, and many records no longer survive or were destroyed at the end of the war.

I can't answer about Volkssturm units in general, but there was a unit called the Freikorps Sauerland, which was was set up in Westphalia in late 1944 and comprised several battalions and a regimental staff. I did some research on them in particular a while back and there's a book available about th...

I have heard mixed reviews about Sanjay from different people. Some say he does very good work making copies of originals. One person I know sent him some British Navy uniforms to have reproductions made in his size and they came out wonderfully but took forever. From other people I have heard that ...

The best website I have found for translating individual words (ie, translating reference) has been the LEO dictionary at http://dict.leo.org It has a large amount of words that are not commonly found in your average German dictionary, and if a word is not listed in their database, you can ask about...

I think if you could give more of a context, it would be easier to figure this one out. So far it seems to be obvious that we're talking about some kind of truck or vehicle-mounted weaponry.

Was sich an Gesindel drin herumtreibt, lässt sich erst ganz nach und nach feststellen.
It can only be determined little by little what kind of riff-raff roams the streets.

Modfotos - thank you, those are great. Do you know where on the Siegfried line they were taken? Christoph - Found those already :D I got some nice ones on eBay as well, but I'm still interested in others. I want to see what the dominant color of the Shepherds were (<-- the breed changed over the yea...

BDM girls were trained in the use of firearms and quite a few of them fought. With barely any man power left in the final weeks, anyone who could fire a weapon, be it a 12 year old boy or a 16 year old girl, they would fight This is only right to an extent. In late 1945, Bormann sent a letter to th...

Joe, You can email me at ccrawford@bdmhistory.com if you need help with information about the BDM uniforms. That link Michael gave you is my site. The only reason the link doesn't work is because it includes the comma at the end when you click on it. Copy the link and remove the comma at the end and it should work perfectly fine. Site displays perfect in IE and from what I hear does well in odd browsers like Safari, too.

Hitler Youth patch question

I recently got a bunch of HJ stuff and one of the patches really has me puzzled. It's a medical patch with the "life rune" on it. But it has a red felt background with the rune embroidered in white. I cannot find any references to this patch in my books? Someone on another forum said that ...
