This is the sub-unit of 'SS-Sturmbataillon 500' described by Frithjof Elmo Porsch (alias Ingo Petersson) in various books since the war. Supposedly it was a battalion of disgraced former Waffen-SS officers. While Porsch definitely existed (and indeed still does as far as I know), doubts surround muc...

I think that the sad reality is that Special Forces and Commandos rarely achieve the impact that is hoped for and often claimed on their behalf, even when their operations are, on the face of it, successful. There are exceptions to this, of course - the assault on Eben Emael and the SAS/LRDG airfiel...

Cryderman was one of a group of about fifteen individuals who were recruited into what was then being called the 'Legion of St George' through a form of intimidation, which was used within a special compound at Luckenwalde POW camp (Stalag IIIa). He 'volunteered' for the legion around October 1943 a...

American Waffen-SS Soldier
I've been doing some research in recently declassified British intelligence documents and I believe that I have identified one (and possibly three) of the 5 US Volksdeutsche listed as members of the SS in 1940 (in T-175, 104/2626381). The file in question is KV2/376 in the Public Records Office/Nati...

...are always many different aspects to any situation Jez, but the reality is that you know absolutely f*** all about this and you are wasting my time and everybody else's. I certainly don't have the same views on the BFC as, for example, Bill Medland, but I respect his outlook and I know that he ha...

Interview with Robert Chipchase
The interview with Robert Chipchase was conducted entirely ethically after consultation with a number of lawyers and historians; and I would not have associated myself with any fim maker who did not do so. Jiz's account is tendentious in the extreme. However, I will admit that I was annoyed because ...

Reply to Jez
Jez, Firstly, don't use quotation marks around things I didn't say. What I actually said was: The reality, Jez, is that the Channel 5 documentary was made - with me as 'associate producer' - after I had personally been researching this subject for more than 20 years: it did not alter or cover up any...

A myth in my view...
Stories of this sort appear in books by Sven Hassel and his inferior (if that's possible!) imitators but I have never come across any reliable primary or secondary sources describing incidents of confict between Heer and W-SS troops.

BFC
The only member of the BFC who took part in any fighting in Berlin was Wilhelm Rößler who was the unit's interpreter. He was born in China with a German father and an English mother, but was a German citizen: he felt that it was his duty to fight to the last in defence of the German capital and his ...
