Die Bruecke
When I checked a few years ago, the DVD wasn't particularly available in UK, the situation seems to have resolved itself... original, not the remake, which, to cadge a phrase, seemed a bit 'sexed up' to me. What a film!

Winter blues. Don't know how anyone coped with a Russian one in a regulation wool greatcoat, we're not made of such stern stuff these days!

Re: Theodor Plievier
Thanks for the responses, gents. Yes, managed to glean a little of the author's background as an emigre to USSR. Doesn't seem to be a particular pro-soviet bias in what I've read so far, seems equally critical of both regimes. Enjoying his writing anyhow. Currently revisiting Guy Sajer... dare I ope...

A 1956 copy of Plievier's 'Moscow' just fell into my hands. Anybody rate him?

How did Goering know that? Or was he stuck in the next cell and had to put up with the noises?!

Hitler's Jihadis - Jonathan Trigg
Don't know if anyone else has read this, but I've delved in, and I'm a little baffled by the timeline, unless I'm missing something... seems to have the Handschars shipped off to France during the allied invasion, then return to Croatia in, er, Jan 1944... I think I'm going to have to go back and re...

The teenage blackshirt flirtation was a new one on me. Interesting perspective on WWII from him also. Met him a couple of times during the nineties, seemed a lovely chap.

Dad's Army's Lance Corporal Jones just passed away, which makes me kind of sad.

Re: Sven Hassel is dead
To be fair to the man, he did at intervals make some sort of point that the events he wrote about were tragic ones. At the age I picked those books up (13?) one tended to have one foot still in that childhood 'play soldiers' mentality, I think some of his writing at least made me sit up and think 'o...

Ah, you beat me to it... well, he was no Remarque (although he seemed to borrow from him now and again), but I remember my days of reading those war pulps fondly!

Sven Hassel RIP
It would appear the giant of WWII pulp paperbacks has passed away. Terrible books, but I have happy adolescent memories of them!

You mean he doesn't have one? I was a regular visitor to the (bogus, satirical) Col Gadaffi one.

I don't know if anyone else has seen this yet, but from the point of view of the more, er, eccentric end of the collectors' market, this is quite fun. 'I've 'ad six black girlfriends' reveals Mr Motorhead. 'I wouldn't 'ave made a very good nazi'. Later on, 'if the Israeli army 'ad the best uniforms ...

German aeroplanes' performance
Hello all
Picked up one of those lovely 1970s Blandford reference books on WW1 fighters, something that struck me while thumbing through the pages is that the German fighters seldom seem to have matched the speed of allies' equivalents? Did they make up in manoeverability?
