Wehrmacht vs. Red Army Communications

Who can provide good info on the two sides' signal forces? This is an important facet of the war which does not recieve much attention. How thoroughly were they equpped with radios and what kinds were used? When and how were the tank & panzer forces equipped? Artillery nets? Recon? What was the ...

Good question. I have always read the panzers had R/T equpment from the PzII on, in other words, 39-45. The quote from the 'Vanguard' book is interesting...Have you heard anything more on this topic?

1. I don't think AH really wanted to "defeat" (as in "conquer") the UK. He would've preferred they just shut up and leave him alone (or even join him someday) to fight the USSR. This is the reason for the LW blitz on UK- so they would sue for peace. 2. I don't think AH really car...

Indeed, Univ. Libraries might have enormous numbers of books-but don't forget to check periodicals like the Soviet 'Voenno-istoricheskii zhurnal' which was translated into english by various US military depts over the years. The UW Madison (Wisconsin) library has a very good (1000+)collection of Sov...

Heres a tip for translating German military words:They often consist of several words stuck together, like 'versorgungs/truppe' or 'waffen/ausstatung'. Try to break the word down by whatever seems to be the component words and look up each part in the G-E dictionary.

1.You should get a Ger-Eng dictionary 2.If you can scan and post the chart, that would help. 3.There are websites/books which have 'keys' to the WW2German Orginization charts-I can't remember which they are, However: Kampfende Truppe=Troops/units/formations at the end of the fighting/after the battle...

PzAA 21

Thanks, guys. Presumably PzAA 21 also served as a 'beobachter' (observation) unit for other units of the div, which helps explain the rather large number of AFVs. IIRC Pz Div's Artillery Rgt had its own 'Beob' unit (under control of Art Rgt,not AufklAbt) 21 Pz seems to be an exception to this (?) Thi...

Book Prices vs. Quality vs. Market share

I once wrote a letter to a distributor of Ger WW2 titles ('E.Front Books',back in 1990-ish) asking him about what I consider to be overpriced product. He told me it was the matierials used, AND the tiny market share, which combine to create high prices. But I wonder: If certain publishers were to som...

Op. Goodwood Film

Does anyone know of a documentary film produced circa 1975 by the British 'Directorate of Army Training' called 'Operation GOODWOOD'? This film contains interviews w/Brit and German participants (vLuck) etc. Could it be available commercially? Was it ever broadcast in the UK?

What was the exact composition of this unit? Both Zetterling and the Heimdal book by J-C Perrigault on 21.PzD say it had about 150 armored vehicles (!) Is this true or is it perhaps some sort of 'gleiderung' error? For such a large armored unit, it does not get mentioned very much in the text, and t...

WW2 Books-The Specialty Market

Why do the various Military publishers use very expensive components (hardcover, thick, glossy paper, etc) which require $100.00 price tags? Why won't a publisher like JJF or Schiffer or RZM etc. translate and publish German unit histories (for example) using the usual $10-$20, 8"x5" paperbac...

The Heidkamper book was part of the 'Wehrmacht im Kampf' series published during the 50's-60's by Kurt Vowinckel Verlag. I have seen these books in a couple of US university libraries. You will want to try inter-library loan,if possible.
If you want your own copy-good luck!

The Russian websites are RKKA.ru Milatera.lib.ru mechcorps.rkka.ru among others. They contain tons of ViZH articles, books, reports, etc. You'll probably want to use Babelfish or some kind of translator(unless you read Russian). I'm working on a Panzer Campaigns/Smolensk '41 scenario covering the campai...

Please do! I'm doing Yelnia-Yartsevo for a wargame. I'm mainly interested in action after Aug 28,1941-Das Reich was gone from the salient by then-but I'll be glad to get them. Ironically,I've discovered a number of websites from Russia which contain info on the battle, but almost nothing from Germany...
