Although the Armored ('Gep.') PzGren Bns were not supposed to have towed lt. flak, sometimes they did. Also, the powers that be decided the armored SPWs were too useful as infantry carriers, and that making them into flak wagons was a waste of their utility. The flak could just as easily be mounted ...

There's a site from Germany called "Wochenschau-Archiv" (available in English http://www.wochenschau-archiv.de/index.php?logout=1&PHPSESSID=78e216c3db323044894c3c2339b4c4de&sprache=eng It's best to register (free) and have a broadband connection. There are a few dozen WW II era new...

HELP: Some posted images don't appear in the forums

:? I can only view about half of the JPGs which get posted to the forums. The others are replaced by little red X's. There is no logical reason why some appear but not others, unless it has something to do with copyright restrictions. Other image formats (BMP,GIF) all seem to appear normally. This h...

Wow! That could very well be... She was definitely there from time to time. I remember reading there were obviously quite a few Black and African-American entertainers in Paris before the war, e.g. Jo and Thelonious Monk the great jazz pianist. They didn't or couldn't get out before the Nazis, so th...

21.PzD 1944

Do you know what led vSchweppenburg to reach his conclusions about 21.Pz having undesireables? I always had the impression the officers were uniformly good if not excellent; don't know about the EM tho. Oppeln was a well-decorated vet of 6.PzD with an excellent reputation-see Glantz's book on Kursk,...

In the Heimdal book on 21.PzD, it says the Aufkl Abt's 3. & 4. Kps had 250s (28 ea) and 5. Kp (schw) w 251's (27), plus various HW. No French equipment in the Aufkl. Abt. except for possibly a couple P107s for communications. The book isn't sure. The 125.PzGrRgt had 79xP107, and the 192.PzGrRgt ...

My whole argument about not including artillery personnel in combat strength effectiveness is a general one, not specifically directed to any time or nationality. If it simply cannot be done with any great degree of accuracy for all sides of WW II, then so be it. :? I still feel my points are entire...

I DO believe you, Rich! :D :D :? :( Do you happen to know if the Germans ever made any wartime (WWII) analysis of their infantry's, er, "combat effectiveness"? Did they try to do what I was proposing? The root of my proposal came about while I was trying to work out company-level strengths...

Sid, Youre right :D Which is why.... I favor excluding “combat-support” personnel from calculations of overall, man-to-man “combat effectiveness”, and why making these calculations with those personnel included are misleading, and ultimately meaningless, and unquantifiable. I think you think I'm adv...

Hi Qvist, Rich, etc… One problem is the word "combat". Am I correct in saying the German “Gefecht” is used more like the English word “engagement” or “action”, rather than “combat” or “fighting” (“Kampf)...? Innumerable books and writings (and of course internet forums) about WW II compare...

Sean, sorry for being so long in replying, but I have been ill. First, I think Qvist has actually answered a lot of your points as I would have, but I will try to possibly answer some others. In effect by trying to develop "bottom up" data for engagements, you are falling into the same tr...

Sean Quote: Correct, which is why I propose using a single definition of "Combat Troops", rather than one based on each nation's own definition Qvist: Uh, that it is in fact the opposite of the point I was making - which was that if you do deviate from the ones used by each nation, you wi...

Hey Sean! Glad to be of assistance! You have The Leibstandarte Volume III, eh? Here is something interesting. Have a look at pages 397-399. It is interesting that for January 11, 1944 the strength reports for the respective units are given in a combat strength and a trench strength. Do you think it...
