Topic: Did German tankers wear helmets While in Their Tanks?

I think that helmets were required to be worn in the tank when travelling over rough ground, unfortunately this made the wearing of the intercom headphones awkward, as they didn't fit properly under the helmet. Later in the war, a set of modified headphones were issued that were expressly designed f...

Tragerflugzeug Bf 109T

The Bf 109T variant did see service, though only from land bases. The arrestor gear and catapault spools were removed, though the aircraft retained its longer span wings. These enabled it to operate from shorter runways than would have been possible with the 109E (from which it was derived). I think...

Pak40 writes of a "what if" Panther near the Nile. Check out the Airfix Panther boxtop for a great what if - a troop of Panther G/A thundering out of a village with the ubiquitous palm trees in shot. OK so it's totally spurious but to a 10 year old in 1981, was exciting enough to prompt me...

I know of one W-SS officer who served with the FHQ and stated that he did have such an armband. This man was from the "Florian Geyer" division. Unfortunately I have no photographich evidence to visually prove this. In all likelihood this officer was Hermann Fegelein, commander of the 8th ...

According to regulations, PzGren were to have been outfitted in the SP Gun outfits c.1944, but this was by no means universal. I think the Panzer Lehr division equipped the grenadiers with the outfits in time for the Normandy battles but have scant idea as to what other divisions did.

"This film also features Hans Christian Blech (b.1915 - d.1993), who plays the local schoolmaster-turned Heer officer, and it's similar to the same decent and weary part he played as Robert Shaw's aide in 'The Battle Of the Bulge' (1965), a film which I wouldn't count as a very good candidate f...

Hitlers gold Party Badge

I think that this was given to Magda Goebbels as a farewell gift by Hitler, she was later seen in the bunker wearing it as a brooch. Presumably it was destroyed when her corpse was burned.

Re: WWI German Canteen/Swedish Markings?

I have obtained a unique canteen thinking it was WWI German due to the markings and gray cover. It is basically the typical aluminum tear-shaped canteen that the Germans use, having been polished (you can tell by small dents). It has a grey felt cover like the Swedish ones, but unlike both the Swed...

Re: factory flights

Your right, other manufacturers did have factory protection flights usually made up from pre production models later cancelled from series production. Heinkel with their 112 springs immediately to mind but try the book Luftwaffe Aircraft of WW2 which lists most of them. Focke-Wulf also operated a f...

I mainly collect dust. I used to collect WWII memorabilia - basically anything I could lay hands on cheaply. Mainly Allied uniforms/webbing but a few original Wehrmacht bits such as cap badges. The piece de resistance had to be the hanging chain from a 1936 pattern SS Dagger. At present the o...

Now for the WORST war film

There have been some major turkeys released on celluloid. Top of the list has to be "Wheels of Terror" loosely based on the Sven Hassell book and purportedly starring John Carradine and Oliver Reed (in fact they appear about 3 minutes before the film ends). Su85s pretending to be something...

Hello Blackfire, I had forgotten about the use of airships for subhunting. Have you run into any statistics concerning the number of kills attributed to airships? I don't think that they killed any! The purpose of these airships was to patrol and report. For this their unique ability to hover and p...

I have read in several books about the SS men being tattooed with their blood group under their left armpit. What form did the tattoo take?

i know that my tunic is 1943 Wehrmacht but i just want to know that did some SS units used it too in training. In all likelihood they did - and probably in the front line during the summer. Keneally first published his book under the title "Schindler's Ark" Following the release of the film under the title "Schindler's List", the book was retitled to suit. I have read copies with the different titles and the content appears to be the same in both cases.
