Try U Boat Net, as they have a page dedicated to turm insignia. Failing that post a query on their forum, which should prove fruitful.

I have seen such a badge before, I think that it is a postwar replica, possibly for sale on the german market (where the hakenkreuz is prohibited).

Fate of the last of the KM capital ships

In the past 15 or so years, thanks to advances in underwater exploration, the final resting places of Bismarck and Scharnhorst have been discovered. Can anyone shed light upon what happened to their sisters, namely Tirpitz and Genisenau? I know Tirpitz capsized after 617 Squadron, RAF dropped the Ta...

Sho-ka-kola

Would the full name be Sho-ka-kola? "Der starkende schokolade" - "The fortifying chocolate". This was plain chocolate moulded as a disc with radial grooves impressed into it (so it could be broken into portions). Also sold in round tins, like boot polish comes in. It is still ava...

For those interested in figure modelling, Dragon do a set of 12 SS grenadiers, at leat one of which is wearing an Italian cammo overall. A 1944 picture of HJ tankmen playing guitar and drums is interesting as they look like the prototype Hells Angels (leather outfits, deathsheads on their caps). Coi...

What does this mean?

From a photo of a German sign in Tunisia: Ersatz u. Urlauber HALT! Auffang u. Weiterleitungsstelle noch 500m The late, great Spike Milligan captioned the photo "Halt - in German" (it is in "Monty - His part in my victory) but there must be more to it than that! :D Ersatz und Urlauber ...

Well, it all depends, really. The factories would continue to use old stocks of earlier insignia until they ran out, so it is possible that older insignia might appear on later pattern tunics. The thing to do is check your references. Wade Krawcyzk's book on German uniforms has a Gebeirgsjager M1942...

Does anybody know what happened to the children of Goebbel's couple? Did the Russian's do the humane thing and buried them somewhere, or are they stored in some cellar at Moscow? Again, according to "The Death of Hitler" the bodies of Joseph and Magda Goebbels, their children, Col. Krebs,...

Other German Helmets

There was also a variant of the M1916 intended for Turkish usage. The peak on the front of the helmet was removed as the Turks' faith forbade them to shade their eyes. Apparently none were delivered but saw service in 1919 with the Frikorps - they are visible in contemporary photos.

Apparently at least one of Hitler's tunics survived (slightly scorched) and is in Moscow, three skull fragments allegedly his are in a Moscow archive, kept in a cardboard box that previously held biro refills. The remains were examined by an independant foresic scientist who claimed to by 90% certai...

Cap & Tunic

I agree that the LW cap is a West German one, if you look under the sweatband you should find foam rubber padding. Also, the peak is most likely plastic. The cap band looks to be grey, wartime ones were black mohair. Value is not likely to be high, unless the insignia are original. I would guess tha...

Re tunic identification

Without actually seeing the tunic in question I can't say for definite but from your description it sounds like a West German Luftwaffe one. These are charcoal grey in colour and possibly a wool/rayon mix (the moths don't seem to like them). The collar is the open style seen on LW or DAK tunics and ...
