He was quite the pilot. He was also an ardent Nazi, and quite full of himself..vain to a fault. Have read a variety of accounts, one from a LW pilot at the end of the war who had to share prison space with him. He said he was a total ego maniac and had problems getting along with "commoners."

The German governemnt has been very careful about including him in any museum exhibitionsabout German aircraft desgn history, personalities, etc. because of his right wing views.

One further grade of the Knight's Cross series of awards, the Ritterkreuz with Golden Oakleaves, Swords and Diamonds, was instituted on 29 December 1944. This truly beautiful award was presented on only the one single occasion, to the Luftwaffe's legendary tank-busting Stuka ace Oberst Hans-Ulrich Rudel, on New Year's Day 1945. That says it all about Rudel.

Diamonds for the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross for Hans-Ulrich Rudel

On March 27, 1944, Major Rudel was able to destroy 17 enemy (Soviet) tanks. The next day, he was able to destroy 9 Soviet tanks again and increased the total number of tanks destroyed to 202. On March 29, 1944 he was awarded the Diamonds.
