Under his rough, old before his time, exterior beat a heart of gold; hardened though by the loss of his whole family in a bombardment of Kassel. He more or less "adopted" me as a subsitute son or so, and I adopted him as my grandfather. He did not play favors though, and besides revering him, I also had the fear of God for him.
He was a veteran from "way back", A guy who could say: "Been there, done that". May he rest in peace.
