I read that the NEW Abrams is far superior to the Leopard II. Is this true?

IMHO, comparing the two is unfair, because the Leopard II has never seen combat. But this is a WWII board, so I'll rest my case.

The first Abrams did not have the smooth bore 120. Thus back in the dark ages, the Leopard, which does not have very angled armor, beat the Abrams in a live fire.

Since that event, the Abrams was upgraded.

Of course he was not "battle-testet". But Leopard II has been testet so much, seen so many military maneuvers...well...that it is quite probable that in a real combat situtation its gun will not fall off. In fact its one of the most proven tank designs in existence.

Hi,

The Leopard II could be good and the Abrams has the german 120mm smooth bore gun but to pierce the armor of the US tank one needs to use depleted uranium APDS round.
Does Germany use this kind of ammunition ?

No Germany doesn't. Tungsten projectiles are used instead.
Regarding this Cobham Armor of the M1A2...You should not read to much Clancy (who is one of those Cobham miracle armor promoters). Actually the Leopards armor is similar effective...a bit less on the body but the Leopards turret is better armed. A Leopard II gun with a tungsten armor piercing projectile easily destroys an Abrams M1 A2.

Also do not believe the crap some people tell about the reactive armor of some Russian tanks...T80 /T90. The Abrams/Leo Gun rips them apart.

Hi,

The front armor of the Abrams turret is made not only in chobam alloy but with depleted uranium. In the first gulf war, no T72 with 125mm gun ( muzzle speed 1 750 m/s) destroyed Abrams M1. The only Abrams lost in tank to tank combat was hit by an another Abrams. Anyway even the Tiger II could been destroyed so noone is invincible. The Abrams is better than the Leopard for at least one reason : with an Abrams you could repair a helicopter engine.
