"Tulip" design on aircraft

Post by Tony »

I have read and seen photos of Erich Hartmann's Bf 109G that has black "Tulips" on the nose of his fighter... did any other pilots adapt this to their aircraft?

Tony :

Hermann Graf also sported tulip noses from his JG 52 days. Of special note is his Bf 109G-6 flown in JG 50 on anti-mossie and US bomber duties. The Tulip is red with yellow outline.

First off the rank

Most of these pictures of pilots in their planes are publicity shots. Generally a pilot gets the first plane on the rank. Execpt for some bomber pilots no one gets a particular plane.

Although in practice pilots do try to use the same plane if they can.

Blackfire.......huh ?

Sorry but Graf's 109 is very well documented as well as Kamerad Alfred Grislawski's

Tony: Graf flew a couple different a/c in JG 50, a seperate a/c for chasing the Mosquito day bomber and then another fitted with either the Dodel rocket launchers or the 2cm waffen pods. One a/c had a white tail with some of his victories listed on the rudder with also a numeral one on the back of the fueslage.

see Christer Bergström's site : http://www.graf-grislawski.elknet.pl/jg50.htm.

he will be producing his excellent book on the two aces GRaf/Grislawski through friend Jerry Crandall in the near future......
