Searching for Information on 2 Luftwaffe Soldiers

Post by Brig »

I just received 2 pieces of the framework from a crashed ME-110 Nightfighter. I am searching for any information on either on these two men:

Pilot Sergeant Franz Westphal
Radio Sergeant Friedrich Schopwinkel

Here's what I know:

Squadron:5
Group: NJG 1
Plane Type: ME-110 G4
Manufactorer Number: 5573
Plane Marking: G9+HM

This plane crashed on Nov. 29, 1943 in the forest of Rocherath, Belgium 5KM south of Bullingen/Eifel Airfield. Official reason for crash unknown. Both men listed above KIA

how can nI go about finding information? Thanks

Brig :

You need to write a letter in German about your inquiry to th NJG Gemeinschaft representative......

Herbert A.W. Thomas
Velsstrasse 46
44803 Bochum
Germany

Ask if it is possible to contact the Verbands formation NJG 1 representative for more information.

Herbert is a former NJG 2 veteran and lost a leg due to action with the enemy. He is quite a gentleman so keep this in perspective when you write him please.

Also I would be interested in how you fair with correspondance to your inquiry.

much success !
