Question on Walther P-38 pistols

Good afternoon all,
Could anyone please tell me when P-38s were first issued, and to what units? Was it just a blanket roll-out or were certain units given priority?

I don't believe records were kept on the first issue of the P.38. The Zero Series pistols were put out for trials / testing but I've never seen records on the units receiving them. None of the books in my library (AFAIK) cover the topic. Perhaps some of the military newspapers might have stories of the new pistol.
