My war comics collection

First up is Combat #1 - 1961 from the long lost Dell comics. The artwork is excellent, it is one of my favourite comic covers. Will the plucky Brits "Get the Bismarck!"

Next up is Fightin' Marines #11 - 1954. Check out the maniacal Leatherneck Jack, as he gleefully uses his flame-thrower at point-blank range! Just the thing for kiddies to read! Still, they're only inhuman chi-coms

Next up is US Paratroops #3 - June 1952 from the late lamented Charlton Comics. Check out the supermen US para! Machine gunning that evil Chi-com right out of the plane while still in his parachute - hooray! Give up now Commie!

Well, considering the "commie" was flying what seems to be an F9F Panther fighter jet, he kinda deserves to get shot. Unless he liberated it. Should have stuck to the MiG-15, best fighter of the Korean War.

Hi D, at first I thought the sneaky chicom was flying a Stuka! As you will see with further posts, the Korean War created propaganda that would shame Dr Goebbels! Some of the covers show our Asian friends to be little more than apes. As you will also see, Dell and Charlton did indeed have some most excellent cover art. Thanks for your comments!

Here is my True War Experiences vol.2 #1 - Sep 1952 - from Harvey Publications. See how the Wild Bulls of Korea mow down the enemies of freedom! Who needs a gun when you've got a jeep But wait! Why not run them down AND shoot them just for good measure! Is it just me, or is that gun firing towards the groin area of the dastardly commie? Serves him right!

You don't have to tell me, I grew up on the stuff!!!! To this day, when I think of "Jet Fighters", the first image in my mind is an F-86 shooting up a MiG-15!

Nice pics though, brings back a lot of memories.

Next up is Attack #3 - Jan 1972 from the great Charlton comics. Three good stories, but the third was the best. A young USN officer gets a beating from a godless agent of Nippon, but years later gets his revenge. By this time both protagonists are Captains, and the sterling Yank sinks that evil Jap's carrier - nyah nyah ner nyah nyah!

TROY, YOU'VE JUST MADE AN OLD COMMISSAR VERY HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I remember buying and reading that comic. I remember that I was amazed at the concept of an all black cover with the silhouette of the character peering ghostily back at me. Anyone who saw the comic when it was new, I think, first noticed the black background and the figure, not the two fighter planes dogfighting. The Baron just stood there dominating the rest of the cover. It was an amazing piece of artwork!!!!!

I never really followed the history of comics, but as an avid reader of them, I knew from the cover alone that I was about to read somthing new in war comics!!!! "Enemy Ace" deserved far better promotion than DC gave him. Unlike Marvel, I never thought that DC was capable of recognizing a winner when they had one!

Next up is Battle #15 - Dec 1952 from Atlas comics, which, as you all know, went on to become mighty Marvel
Check that GI go! Those dastardly chicoms are going down left right and centre! As a bonus, those heroic USAF fighter pilots have scratched another MiG - hooray!

Next up is Captain Steve Savage #6 - Aug 1952. Fighting jets over Korea! Check out how Captain Steve is hosing that commie MiG! Go Steve! And the enemy flak looks suspiciously like a German 88mm. But that flak doesn't bother Captain Steve - he's an agent of freedom! Although strangely, he is wearing a red helmet!
