Hello to all :D; in order to complement the fighting in the coastal region here goes a brief account of the struggle for Westerplatte...................

Fighting in the coast of Pomerania, Danzig and Hela

Westerplatte – Septiembre de 1939.

After Poland had recovered its independence in 1918, it was guaranteed to the new state the establishment of a military garrison in the Westerplatte in order to guard by the Polish interests in the port of the free city of Danzig.

By Resolution of the Council of the League of Nations dated on December 09 of 1925 a total force of 88 Polish soldiers was authorized as garrison there (2 Offrs, 20 NCOs and 66 Enlisted Men). As the relations Germans-Poles tightened the number of troops was raised to 182 men, being this the manpower on September 01 of 1939. The task of the Polish garrison was to resist during 6 hours (soon it rose to 12 hours) until the arrival of reinforcements.

Fighting in the coast of Pomerania, Danzig and Hela

Westerplatte – September of 1939.

During the the ship’s visit, the Polish garrison maintained a high degree of readiness. In fact, in the lower decks of the ship was housed the Assault Company of the Navy (Marinestosstrupp Kp) under orders of Oberleutnant Henningsen, this subunit had been quartered in the Grammar School in Memel until August 23, 1939, after the annexation of that region by the III. Reich. The company had 225 men when left Memel towards Danzig on August 24, 1939. Once at the port, Oberleutnant Henningsen had acquired 50 civilians costumes, which were dressed by turns by the members of the subunit to disembark from the ship.

As stated before, on August 25, 1939 at 16:00 hours the ship docked at Danzig and at 17:00 hours came aboard the President of the Senate of the city, Arthur Greiser and shortly thereafter the Chief of Police of Danzig, Generalmajor Eberhardt.

Fighting in the coast of Pomerania, Danzig and Hela

Westerplatte – September of 1939.

On August 28, 1939, the ship was visited by the Polish Commissioner to the Free City of Danzig, Minister Chodacki who drank tea with the Commander and then left.

Next day, Kapitän z. See Kleikamp returned visit at home of the Commissioner. On August 30, 1939, it was learned about the ultimatum of Hitler and the Polish mobilization. On August 31, 1939 at 18:35 hours, it was received the orders for the attack, the date scheduled was on September 1, 1939 at 04:45 pm.

During the evening of August 31, 1939 the phone rang at the desk of Mayor Jan Zychon, who was Chief of the Division II (Intelligence) of the Pomerania Army. Die Gäste kommen durch die Brücke... (visit comes across the bridge) the Major barely recognized the voice of one of his informants, who whispered the code words and cut. The Germans moved into the Free City of Danzig. The report caused shock, but no one suspected it was an ominous sign of war. The report was cabled to Warsaw at the General Staff.

Fighting in the coast of Pomerania, Danzig and Hela

Westerplatte – September of 1939.

War!.

On September 1, 1939 at 00:30 hours the Company landed and lined up along the "Schleswig-Holstein" to run the planned assault. At 02:00 hours the company took its starting position for the attack about 400 meters from the wall of Westerplatte, the collecting point of wounded was at a cafe 100 meters from the starting position.

In the Polish garrison, the soldiers of Sergeant Jan Gryczman were preparing to return to their barracks after a grueling night of service when a shot rang out that bounced off the brick walls and got lost on the still sleeping city at the mouth of the Vistula. It was 4:17 hours ...

At 04:40 hours, a faint mist rose above the Neufahrwasser and surrounding buildings, the "Schleswig-Holstein" left its berth and went to the center of the mouth of the Vistula River to the Westerplatte, once the most popular resort of Danzig and since 1920, ammunition depot and Polish garrison. All the crew occupied their battle stations. The ship was only 100-200 meters from the target. Suddenly the battle stations' alarms sounded along the entire vessel, Fire! And it followed the huge detonations.

Fighting in the coast of Pomerania, Danzig and Hela

Westerplatte – September of 1939.

War!.

At 04:50 hours Maj. Sucharski established telephone communication with the naval command in Gdynia and reported that: at 04:45 hours the battleship Schleswig-Holstein began bombing "Westerplatte”, it continues so far.

Thick clouds of powder, yellow-brown coming out continuously from the gun’s tubes and enveloped the ship. Like meteors, the tracer of the fired projectiles, indicated its course toward the target. Huge black clouds rose from the Westerplatte. Iron, stone, earth and trees were flying in disorder and bright flames broke out everywhere.

The salvos of artillery covered the barracks, ports, warehouses and railway station, there Supervisor Jan Najsarek was buried under the ruins, he was probably the first victim of World War II. Artillery fire and explosions were mixed in a horrible roar startled equally defenders and attackers.

The barrage of deadly fire lasted only six minutes and everyone wondered whether someone could be alive within the Westerplatte after that, that doubt would be unveiled soon.

Fighting in the coast of Pomerania, Danzig and Hela

Westerplatte – September of 1939.

War!.

The first assault.

After this brief artillery preparation, at 04:55 hours, the company launched the assault as follows: on the right the 1. Platoon, on the left 2. Platoon in the center the Engineers Platoon. From the new port would support with its fire a heavy machine-gun Platoon from the ship under orders of Leutnant Hartwig and a machine gun C/30.

The 1. Platoon to the right, penetrated into the Westerplatte through a hole in the wall without much resistance from the enemy and moved ahead nearly 300 meters in the area. The Engineers Platoon moved along the railroad track through the main door and went to the left, suddenly began to receive heavy fire from a distance of 200 meters unleashed from a bunker on the right. The Platoon was stopped.

The 2º Platoon to the left went along the wall and tried to penetrate through the gaps on it but was halted on its trail by machine gun fire, the Platoon Leader, Ofw Graf was shot in the thigh.

It was attempted to move the C/30 machine gun through the door rail to support the engineers platoon but it was impossible due to heavy defensive fire.

The first assault.

On the right, the Company Leader, with the 1. Platoon, managed to advance some 500 meters with little resistance but then began to receive heavy fire from rifles and machine guns from all sides, including sharpshooters hidden in the treetops. At 06:30 hours the attackers troops retreated to the starting position. The company had suffered a large number of dead and wounded.

Heinz Denker, one of the assailants pointed out: we had no clear information about the enemy. We should attack along the railroad tracks just taking an old 1:100.000 scale map, where were not shown the polish fortifications. Almost immediately we noticed that the naval fire was not effective. The 280 mm grenades need to travel 600 meters to activate and in fact the path was barely 400 meters. Later we use these shells as cover.

War!.

Second Assault.

After assisting the wounded, at 07:30 hours on "Schleswig-Holstein" said she was going to restart the fire; at 07:38 hours it was open the fire again. At 07:56 hours the the Company Leader requested the following: the ship may unleash fire for 30 minutes, then 15 minute break and then another half hour of bombardment. At 08:54 hours the fire was finally stopped and the company was prepared for the second assault.

On the left the remnants of the 2 nd Platoon (18 men), at the center remnants of Engineers Platoon (21 men) and to the right the 1 st Platoon reinforced with machine guns and a fraction of SS Heimwehr.

The 2 nd Platoon moved along and close to the wall located approximately 25 meters from the first bunker. The Engineers Platoon crawled slowly delayed by a great number of obstacles set up by the defenders and those generated by the bombing. Nearby on the right moved the 1st Platoon, but it was impossible to link with it, due to enemy fire.

War!.

On September 2, 1939 the guard on duty aboard the "Schleswig-Holstein" reported seeing a white flag waving over the Westerplatte, but when German troops came to take possession of the garrison they were repulsed by heavy fire. According to the testimony of the Polish 2nd in Command, Kpt Franciszek Dąbrowski, after violent bombings of those early days, Maj Sucharski lost control and ordered to hoist the white flag but Dąbrowski relieved him immediately and he personally knocked the signal down, ordering to resume the fight.

Fighting in the coast of Pomerania, Danzig and Hela

Westerplatte – September of 1939.

War!.

On September 7, 1939 at 04:00 hours a company belonging to the Pionier-Lehr-und Versuch-Bataillon Dessau-Roßlau (Oberstleutnant Karl Henke) with flamethrowers was alarmed in order to carry out the attack later. The assault would have naval gunfire support from the "Schlesvig-Holstein" and was planned in three phases:

1 st phase - assault of two Platoons of the engineers company.
2 nd phase - a Platoon of engineers on the right flank and a Platoon of the company's assault on the left flank.
3 rd phase - Two Platoons of the assault company.

At 4:26 hours started the preparation fire from the ship and heavy weapons shooting from the Neufahrwasser, the fire of preparation ended at 4:48 hours. Then it was developed the first phase and the engineers platoons penetrated about 150 meters inside the outpost forts and blew up all the emplacements found. Meanwhile the troops of the following phases secured the first phase projection, especially against snipers in the trees. Enemy resistance was negligible and the Poles had been withdrawn entirely. The Germans suffered three wounded. Then went into the redoubt a tank which sprayed fuel on trees and set afire them with flamethrowers.
