I have recently discovered my grandfathers effects among his sisters posessions. There were many photos and letters home as well as his Iron Cross 2nd Class. He died in southern russia in 1943. There was one item that has me completely puzzled. There was a horse shoe nail with only a date of '15/11/1942' scratched into it. Does anyone know of any tradition in the German Army of presenting Horseshoe nails? He has an Oberleutnent and had a horse (there are several photos in the collection of him on horseback).
It would be great to have the mytery resolved.

Re: Inscribed Horseshoe Nail Question
The date actually inscribed is '15/11/1941'. Which is around the winter offensive on Moscow.
