Unit's background.

The Machinegun Battalion 7 (Maschinengewehr-Bataillon 7) was raised on Oct 15 1935 in the Training Ground of Königsbruck,, Wehrkreiss IV having its garrison at Dresden, Königsbrucker street. It was composed of 4 companies, 3 of them MG-Coy and 1 as antitank Coy.

Sudetenland 1938.

On Sep 24 1938, the MG Btl 7 fulfilled a field training exercise in the Bavarian Forest near Cham; there together with one engineer battalion, one Signal detachment and several antitank companies supported the attack carried out by the PR 11 and the IR 42. On Sep 25 1938 the battalion was back at Parkstetten.

On Oct 09 1938, the battalion being part of the 10 ID occupied the Sudetenland. It marched from Cham towards Bischofssteinitz in the Bohemian Forest. It came back to its garrison on Oct 20 1938.

Czechoslovakia - 1939.

On March 13 of 1939, Monday, the battalion was alerted. On March 14 of 1939 at 15,00 hours the battalion fully equipped left from Dresden. During the night it arrived at Pirna in the Eastern Mountains. Around 04:00 hours on March 15 of 1939 the battalion was assembled in the forest covered with snow. At 06:00 hours the battalion, with its 3 ª Company (Hauptmann Feuker) as vanguard, crossed the border. It had been ordered to reach the city of Dublice, 5 kilometers due north of Prague, at Point 291. On March 16 of 1939 the Battalion disarmed the Czech Infantry Regiment N º 46. On March 17 of 1939 the MG Btl 7 entered the city of Kladno.

Czechoslovakia - 1939.

Prague.

On April 05 of 1939 the Battalion marched past in the Wenceslao Place in front of the Reichsprotektor Freiherr von Neurath, and the President of the State Emil Hacha. At the end of April of 1939 the MG Battalion left the City of the Prague.

Poland 1939.

1. Deployment.

On August 20 of 1939 the Battalion was alarmed and it went ready. On August 21 of 1939 at 06:00 hours, the Battalion marched by Bautzen, Löbau, Görlitz and Boleslawiec later Haynau where it quartered. On August 22 of 1939, the battalion continued by the highway to Breslau (Wroclaw), after passing through Leuthen and Wahlstadt. After Breslau the Unit continued by Oppeln towards Krappitz in the High Silesia. On August 25 of 1939 at 15:45 hours the battalion was at Krappitz by the Oder River, ready to march.

That night got the march order, being the arrival point Peiskretscham in the border, the objective of its destiny for the 26 of August of 1939, was the Polish city of Tarnowskie. Unexpectedly at 21:00 hours by a telephone call, arrived an order stating the prohibition of the opening of the hostilities. After midnight the battalion left the readiness area in Peiskretscham. On August 28 of 1939, the battalion was again with its vehicles outside the Krappitzer park. During the night the battalion left Krappitz. New lodging in a place called Petergrätz.

Poland 1939.

2. The Campaign.

At the beginning of the Campaign against Poland, the MG Btl 7 was held as reserve within the 10 AOK hence it was deployed behind the infantry divisions of the IV AK.

2. The Campaign.

On September 17 of 1939, Oberstleutnant Freiherr von Falkestein received the order to seize the accesses to the city of Lublin. Nevertheless, the attack of the machine-gun companies was stopped in the outskirts by the Polish troops. Since it did not count on artillery support suffered some losses in the process. In the evening the battalion had to fall back. The 4 ID captured the city of Lublin later; that Division censured in its War Diary the actions of the Commander of the MG Btl 7.

2. The Campaign.

Days later, on September 20 of 1939, the battalion fought again in front of Chelm; there the MG Btl 7 knocked against a Polish regiment. Shortly afterwards, the battalion met the first Russian soldiers. When the commander knew that those territories fell within the sphere of the Soviet Union, the fight was cancelled automatically. Later, the battalion assumed security tasks within the territory under German control.

On September 29 of 1939 the battalion reached Annapol on the Vístula, with the purpose of being engaged in action there. However the employment of the battalion was unnecessary, since the battle had been over. On September 30 of 1939 the battalion raked the forest of Sandomiersz capturing several dispersed Polish soldiers.

2. The Campaign.

On October 03 of 1939 the battalion moved slowly towards the east in order to occupy the established demarcation line. On October 06 of 1939 the battalion was assembled in the market of Parczew and listened the speech of Hitler in the Kroll Opera of Berlin. The battalion remained some days in Parczew. Later, the battalion crossed the Vistula River and it was quartered in the sector of Grójec.
