Did anybody notice that the volunteers in the first photo are wearing British belts ?
I wonder if they were P.O.W's who switched sides.

hey haen2 you're right, these belts really look like british ones, but actually i don't think they switched sides, otherwise they wouldn't be allowed to wear german uniform. but still i don't know the real reason for wearing these belts(british).

I have a feeling that these men could be from a (at the time) Soviet state.

indeed they were from USSR but i don't think they had any chance for mercy from the soviets (i mean after the war)
maybe the belts belonged to former prisonners and to save diverting German military material they were issued with enemy gear?

Hello,

It wouldn't be a surprise if the Germans outfitted these Eastern troops with surplus materials captured from the Allies. For example, I saw pictures of the men of Kalmyuck Kavallerie Korps wearing British belts and spanish garrison caps!

Do you mean overseas or side caps? Actually those caps were probably Belgian, as they wore the same pattern.

Hi,

It is possible too. During the Second World War, usually Eastern troops were supplied were captured Allied equipment or supplies rather than provided with first rate German-made equipment. One must remember, that the Western Allies did air-dropped supplies to SOE operatives in Occupied Europe which were compromised by the Germans (remember the Englandspiel?) which were put to used for supply-hungry Eastern units

French, Czech, Hungarian, Greek, Romanian rifles, British sten guns, explosives were usually distributed among German allies. It's rare enough to see Eastern troops with German made camo smocks or MP40s, let alone the impressive Stg-44.
