Not sure if it's idiomatic or not, but none of my dictionaries holds the answer

It standing for mess, business or any other suitable description?

Abends um 18 Uhr auf die Minute genau begann das Inferno. Der Feind schlug mit seiner ganzen grausamen Kriegsmaschinerie zu. Es begann ein Trommelfeuer auf die Stadt, wie wir es noch nie erlebt hatten. Marschall Koniev und General Glusdowski machten ihre Androhung wahr, sie wollten sich Breslau als "Osterbraten" holen. Keiner von uns ist in den kommenden 48 Stunden aus den Sachen gekommen.

This is one of those where the idea has to be translated rather than the words. The above two translations are certainly not incorrect. However what the writer in my opinion is saying is: "During the next 48 hours we didn't have time to scratch ourselves."
