Tracing a weapon to its unit

Post by DXTR »

Is it possible from the markings to trace a specific weapon to its unit of origin? And how do one do it?

Kind regards

By unit of origin I assume you mean the person it was issued to rather than the manufacturer?

In theory it would be possible to trace it via any surviving documents from the unit or better still from a Soldbuch, as the serials of a soldiers issued weapons were listed within it.

In practice, with neither a Soldbuch relating to the carrier of the weapon or any idea of where the weapon was originally captured/souvenired etc then I'd say almost impossible.

But this forum is one of the best places to ask, so perhaps some has been able to succeed.

Good luck!

I have a similiar question. Would it be possible to trace this at all? My best guess is that it belonged to Pionier-Bataillon 88 of the 46. Infanterie-Division. This photo was taken in Crimea.
