111 Infantry divison

Post by panzergrenadier1944 »

Can anyone give me more info on the 111 infantry divison. My uncle went missing on 20th of August 1943 in the area of Taganrog. He was part of the 1st company, grenadier regiment 50 of the 111 infantry divison. I would like to find out more specific info such as: what battles his unit fought. Maps? ETC. Thanks, Max

Hi there, youre in luck.

I have collected a lot of info on the 111 ID. Some of it is in this thread, regarding Hauptmann Franz Kecht, Knights Cross holder and Battallion Commander killed in action around Melitopol Ukraine Oct 1943

Max,
On 18.08.1943 at 1300, headquarters and units of 111. Inf.Div. were ordered to cover the left flank of the 336. Inf.Div. in the area south of Jelisawetinskij and to exploit any opportunities to counter-attack. The remaining elements of 111. Inf.Div. located in Taganrog were put under control of a command structure led by Oberst v. Bülow, Kdr. Gren.Regt. 686 (336. Inf. Div.).
On 19.08.1943 and 20.08.1943, 111. Inf. Div. tried in vain to block Russian units, which had pushed through north of their position, from turning south and threatening the rear area of 336. Inf.Div. At 0900 on 20.08.1943, Russian troops supported by armor and planes increased their pressure on Bischlerowka, Alexandrowka and hill 175.5. By 1530, 111. Inf.Div. was pushed back to the western edge of Bischlerowka and at 1840 the division was ordered to pull back into defensive positions along the Krinka river.
It is very like that your relative went missing during these actions as German divisions suffered significant casualties as a result of the successful Russian penetration northwest of Kuybyshewo.

Hope this helps.
