After the failure of operation long jump some of the brandenburgers were organised into a panzergrenadier division and the rest were sent to Skorzenys SS Friedenthal jagdverbände. The 3. regiment stayed in northern Italy were it fought as a mountain unit.
How many were sent to each unit and how big were these units? How many troops stayed with the Abwehr II and were there any who joined other Abwehr units? What type of role did the 3. regiment have in Italy and how long did they stay there? Further, from where else did the brandenburg panzergrenadier division recruit its soldiers?
It is said that about 1800 troops were transferred to the SS at the time of the reorganisation. Could this be right?

Another question: Was the failure of operation long jump the deciding factor of the reorganisation?

Daniel,
an order(I./19280) was issued on 13.9.44 to create PzGD "Brandenburg"
as "Panzer Division'44". According to this order the unints of the old
division were to be used as follows:
1.Reg"Br" - to create 1.Jaeger Regiment "Br"
2.Reg"Br" - to create 2.Jaeger Regiment "Br"
I. and III./3.Reg"Br" - to create PzAAbt"Br"
II./3.Reg"Br" - to be integrated into 157.GebDiv
Stab and I./4.Reg"Br" - to create 1.Jaeger Regiment "Br"
Kuestenjaeger Abt"Br" - to create PzPiBtl "Br"
NaAbt"Br" - to create PzNaAbt"Br"
one Btl/LehrReg"Br" - to create FEBtl"Br"
Elements of 1., 2. and 4.Reg"Br" - to create PzAAbt"Br"
Artillery elements of all four Reg's - to create PzArtR "Br"
The rest of the division was to be disbanded and some of its
personal - to be integrated in Waffen SS.(After the bomb plot of
20th July Abwehr was put under control of the SS).
PzGD "Brandenburg" became a "Grossdeutschland"-unit and it
recruited personal from two main sources:
- PzGrenErs-u-AusbBrig "GD"
- LehrReg "Br"
Not much, but , hope this helps. Unfortunately, I have no more
information.
