Personally, I consider ranking unnecessary, but Michel has done well with these choices. I would simply clarify the 'Contributor' rank as someone who contributes to the articles/data on the site. Or money...

Anyone who makes a significant contribution to your website is by definition a contributor. I think the old equation placing quality over quantity ought to be applied.

The same equation affects the 2000-post "Expert" proposal: the level of knowledge or intellect of a member is not defined by the number of posts he or she makes.

A Supporter could be someone who makes a cash or material donation to your website. There again, that could be a Patron. On the other hand, a Patron is more like a sponsor so if you were, say, to find a publisher who sponsored your website or a part thereof, then you could describe him as a Patron.

An Associate might be someone with a website of their own, who associates himself and/or his website with yours either officially or by virtue of having a high profile here.

An Enthusiast could be someone so addicted to this website that he makes endless, often pointless posts.

Just my tuppenceworth...

Please, the German ranks are so, err... "common", nearly as bad as Unterscharführer, Obersturmführer, Rottenführer, Oberstgruppenführer and so on...

I think we should just have, like Michael says :

Then, for the ones who go beyond the call of duty can be given some special title.

What do you think about adding "Forum Hero" as a title? Anyone who stars in a Hero tale qualifies, unless they were a target. Two targets come to mind, but Beppo, Rosselsprung, MH, Prit, Sam, and a host of others would qualify.

Just a thought...

Hi Tom

I would see that as forming a Clique, based on rather tenious ground of being 'involved' in a fictional online tale.

Also I would see it as a dumbing down, that would detract from what is after all a serious historical research site. No SS ranks or military ranks of any kind, just the basics should suffice.

How about the honorary titles of :

SS groupie
SS fan-boy
Communist agitator
Extreme Polish Nationalist
Crack smoker
Denier
Little Kid
Phony Vet
Stalinist apologiser
Beer drinker

Communist agitator
I like that...... :D :D :D

On the other hand, "Forum Hero", IMHO, would be one of the higher accolades.... :D :D :D

Very Best,

Hey Phylo, I've always wanted to see the ranks:

"Superkowledgabe, but Humble" and
"Superknowledgable, but a Pain in the Ass"

or, how about:

"Experten--Beware!"
"IJN Fan--Banzai!!!"

Ah, a world of possibilities....... @{

Best,

For what it's worth, my post was rather tongue-in-cheek. From a strictly academic, research, professionalism standpoint, I agree that a "Forum Hero" rank would look rather silly. On the other hand, within this small community, being a Hero is considered by some to be something special.

I'm rather surprised our good Commissar didn't react to you referring to the Heroes as "dumbing down!" A lot more work goes into that than many people think, eh Rosselsprung??
