No, I do not believe I missing anything, that number is reflected in missing in action or captured: 4,455,620.

I also checked a lot of other sites on Google. I cannot recall each and everyone of them.

I am always willing to read more stuff if you got it. If what was stated is wrong than perhaps you have some better sources (that are in english. Otherwise I would require them translated)

Penal battalions seemed to have been armed just as well as anyone else in the Red Army. The machineguns behind you, was part of the no step back policy, which applied to the ENTIRE army. It encouraged harsh measures, but it simply isn't true that it was carried out to the letter all the time. Come to think of it, nearly all armies do that sort of thing.

Most soldiers who served in penal battalions were there for breaches of military discipline. Stripped of ranks and decorations, expected to go the extra mile. Former POWs and such, who were considered unreliable, were sent to penal battalions, in order to prove themselves. Less common, but more romantic in the public mind, were criminals who volunteered as a way out of the camps. Another element were political undesirables, such as Poles. The really dangerous criminals and political prisoners were NOT sent to the front.
Officers were usually very good and were offered many incentives to serve. They were not criminals.

The soldier would be transfered out upon fulfillment of their objective, or upon injury.
