Ritterkreuzträger in the Kriegsmarine's Kleinkampfverbände

Post by Doktor Krollspell »

Hello!

I wonder if anyone in this Forum have any detailed information of what the following Officers and Sailors in the Kriegsmarine Kleinkampfverbände did to earn the Knight's Cross. They are:

Helmut Bastian (b. 17.11.1916 in Kiel). Kapitänleutnant und Führer einer Sprengboot-flottille (Kleinkampfverband). Recieved KC on 3.11.44.

Herbert Berrer (b. 02.02.1921 in Stuttgart-Botnang). Oberfernschreibmatrose, einzelkämpfer im K.d.K.-Verband. Recieved KC on 5.8.44.

Walter Gerhold (b. 08.06.1921 in Benolpe (Sauerland)). Marine-Schreiber-Obergefreiter, Einmanntorpedofahrer im Kleinkampf-Flottille 361. Recieved KC on 6.7.44.

Johann Krieg (b. 14.03.1919 in Lomnitz, Kreis Hirschberg/Schlesien). Oberleutnant zur See, Chef d. Kleinkampf-flottille 361. Recieved KC on 8.7.44.

Alfred Vetter (b. 24.05.1923 in Kiel). Leutnant (V.), Gruppenführer i.d. Marine-Kleinkampf-Flottille 211. Recieved KC on 12.8.44.

Award and combat history of these Knight's Cross Bearers or any other relevant information would be much appreciated.

Hello Fernando!

Thank you for the biographical data on Kapitänleutnant Krieg. He obviously had a solid U-boot background before being posted to Kleinkampf-Flottille 361. I still wonder though, what he did to earn the Knight's Cross...

I've done some searching on the Internet myself and found information on the website http://www.deutsche-marinesoldaten.de which was useful. When it comes to Oberfernschreibmeister Berrer I found:
Oberfernschreibmeister Herbert Berrer
geboren am 02.02.1921 in Stuttgart-Botnang
gestorben am 09.02.1992 in Hamburg

tabellarischer Lebenslauf

01.10.39 Einberufung zur 13.Schiffsstammabteilung nach Saßnitz
04.04.40 Fernschreibgast und Wachgänger
01.08.40 Fernschreib-Gefreiter
01.08.41 Fernschreib-Obergefreiter
13.10.41 Wachleiter
01.12.41 Fernschreib-Maat
23.08.42 Lehrgruppenführer
20.08.43 Wachleiter, u.a. bei der 9.Torpedoboot-Flottille
01.12.43 Fernschreib-Obermaat
02.12.43 Einmann-Torpedofahrer bei der Kleinkampfflottille 361
01.05.44 Oberfernschreibmeister

Berrer was apparently successful at least twice with an One-man Torpedo, first in the Mediterranean and then of the Coast of France during the Allied liberation of France in 1944. He must have recieved his Knight's Cross for the sinking of the 10.000 tonnage Freighter.

When it comes to Alfred Vetter there is biographical information:
Leutnant (V) Alfred Vetter
geboren am 24.05.1923 in Kiel
gestorben am 15.05.1984 in Kiel

Beförderungen und Auszeichnungen

01.04.42 Kadett (V) - (Ernennung)
01.04.42 Matrosenhauptgefreiter
19.04.42 Kriegsverdienstkreuz II.Klasse mit Schwertern
01.10.42 Fähnrich (V)
01.11.43 Oberfähnrich (V)
01.04.44 Leutnant (V)
11.08.44 Eisernes Kreuz II.Klasse
11.08.44 Eisernes Kreuz I.Klasse
12.08.44 Ritterkreuz als Grpfhr. i.d. Kleinkampf-Fl. 211

Lebenslauf im Überblick

01.10.41 Eintritt in die Kriegsmarine
20.12.43 - 10.03.45 Kleinkampfverbände, u.a. KdK-Flottille 211 (Sprengboote)
18.04.45 - 08.05.45 Marine-Panzer-Jagd-Regiment I (Gysae)
09.05.45 - 24.05.46 II.Verwaltungsoffz.i.d. 1.DMEA.
Apparently, Vetter ended his wartime career in a Kriegsmarine Panzer-Jagd unit. This unit, Marine-Panzer-Jagd-Regiment I, is not mentioned in Tessin's book, but there was a Pz.Jg.Abt. in the 1. Marine-Infanterie-Division and I wonder if any Forum member know if it's the same unit or two different units?

Last in the line from the above mentioned source is Kapitänleutnant Helmut Bastian which also contains just biographical data:
Kapitänleutnant Helmut Bastian
geboren am: 17.11.1916 in Kiel
gestorben am: 07.03.1996

Beförderungen und Auszeichnungen

01.07.38 Oberfähnrich zur See
01.10.38 Leutnant zur See
06.11.39 Eisernes Kreuz II.Klasse
01.10.40 Oberleutnant zur See
10.11.40 Zerstörer-Kriegsabzeichen
01.02.43 Kapitänleutnant
06.09.43 Eisernes Kreuz I.Klasse
09.06.44 Deutsches Kreuz in Gold
03.11.44 Ritterkreuz als KLt., Einsatzleiter von Kleinkampfverbänden sowie Chef der Kleinkampfflottille 211
15.02.45 Kleinkampfabzeichen der Kleinkampfmittel I.Stufe

Dienststellungen

10.06.39 WO Wilhelm Heidkamp
06.03.40 WO, Torpedo-O. Bruno Heinemann
15.12.41 Adj. d. Flottenchefs, Adm. Schniewind
15.02.43 - 14.06.44 Kdt. Möwe
21.07.44 - 08.05.45 im Kommando der Kleinkampfverbände
- Chef Lehrkommando 200
- Chef Kleinkampfflottille 211
Not much room for speculation on the Admiral's son from the above mentioned information, except for him being an Einsatzleiter, leading an assault maybe/probably...?

There was no useful information from http://www.deutsche-marinesoldaten.de on Gerhold and Krieg so please keep searching. (and posting!)

I would still help from Forum members in finding facts, descriptions, reports etc on Bastien, Gerhold, Krieg and Vetter when it comes to why they won their Knight's Crosses while serving the Kriegsmarine's Kleinkampfverbände so please...

With best regards,

I've done some further reading on the Kleinkampfverbände and found the following on:

Walter Gerhold (b. 08.06.1921 in Benolpe (Sauerland)). Marine-Schreiber-Obergefreiter, Einmanntorpedofahrer im Kleinkampf-Flottille 361. Recieved KC on 6.7.44.

Walther Gerhold participated, on the night between July 5 & 6 1944, in a massed "Neger" Einmanntorpedo assault (24 "Neger") on the "Mulberry Harbours" defense line (the so called "Trout Line?) of military vessels. During this assault, Gerhold shot at, hit and sunk the British Fregate HMS Trollope at 03.04 on July 6. After a wild allied hunt for the "Neger"-Piloten, Gerhold managed to escape and was picked up from the water by Honfleur by Heer soldiers.
For more details of participants in the above mentioned assault, see:

http://www.feldgrau.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=15547

The Allied Navy units in the area were apparently taken by complete surprise. The information on, and experience of the "Neger" from the Anzio beach head was apparently NOT passed on to Naval units at Normandie. Quite an intelligence mistake!

Hello Erich!

There are several photos of Gerhold and the other men in the book by Blocksdorf. It would always be interesting/nice though, to have more illustrating pictures in this, and other posts...
Here's a link to a good picture of Walter Gerhold:

http://www.das-ritterkreuz.de/index_sea ... rd=gerhold

Again, yes! I'm always interested in seeing new pictures of the men and different wartime equipment.

More on Johann-Otto Krieg apart from the information given by Fernando earlier on this post.

Johann Krieg (b. 14.03.1919 in Lomnitz, Kreis Hirschberg/Schlesien). Oberleutnant zur See, Chef d. Kleinkampf-flottille 361. Recieved KC on 8.7.44.

Krieg was the first commander of the K-Flottille 361 and led the unit when it went into action at Anzio. He probably recieved the Knight's Cross for leading the unit and not for participating/leading any assaults with the "Neger" torpedoes. On the Flottille's transportation from Italy, via Germany, to France and the Invasion coast, there seemed to have been several accidents with the Lkw's dropping "Neger" torpedoes to the ground etc. Oberleutnant zur See Krieg was apparently seriously wounded in the head in a traffic accident during these transports and was hospitalized. Command over K-Flottille 361 went to a Oberleutnant zur See Leopold Koch who led the unit on the invasion coast.

Source: Still the same book by Helmut Blocksdorf.

Still, Johann-Otto Krieg recived the Knight's Cross in July so my "qualified" guess is that it was for Command (and instruction) leadership over the Flottille during build up, training and the Anzio action and not actual participation in combat/assault with the "Neger" torpedoes.
As always, I welcome any input from fellow Feldgrauians! Here's the link for a photo on the man:

Hello Jan-Hendrik!

Thanks for your comment! My focus when it comes to studying WWII and Germany has shifted more to the lesser known units and individuals and also to the more obscure facts and details. Yes, I have read my (huge) share on the Panzerwaffe, the Waffen-SS, the Jagdflieger and so on, but now it's the Kleinkampfverbände of the Kriegsmarine and also for example the Feuerwerker RKT or the Wekusta - Wetterkundungsstaffel. There are always new and interesting perspectives to be found, don't you agree?

About this thread on the RKT of the Kleinkampfverbände, I plan to add on with more info and photos and so on, so thanks for bringing it up again! :D

And Jan-Hendrik, let me also say that I really enjoy your expertize on Wehrmacht in general and the Panzerwaffe in particular. You always make interesting and informative posts... they're good reading! :[]

Here's more on Bastian

Thank you very much

I always apreciate such posts as they are enhancing my horizon! Doing your own research you are always in danger of getting "betriebsblind" , to not recognize any more what right or left of your "path" !

Antoher point I want to mention here is to honor people who are spending their time giving people answers to their questions . Often enough I am annoyed about this manner in Forums , as much as for the tons of E-Mail with requests for help , that in most cases people are to lazy to even drop a simple "thank you" or so ( thats why I stopped answering this amount of Mails  ) .

I think many members should think a little about this

And now some photographs... Starting with Walther Gerhold, the "Neger" RKT. The quote on him and later on Vetter are contemporary German official press release texts to the photos.

Dok, this book sounds interesting if you don't already have it...

DANKE ENRICO!!
