The War Diary of the 17 Infantrie Division indicates that this Division participated in the attack on Gomel in August 1941, as part of Armee Korps XIII.
The only mention of a Cavalary Division I can find in the German Order of Battle is 1 Cossack Division, which was not formed until 1943.
Can anyone shed any light on this?

Hello!
If you mean the book I suspect please put it away far behind in your shelf. Could it be that it is a book based on Allied Intelligence services informations from the war?? Then it is full of errors.
I am afraid that the books I use are not available to you but I would recommend these sites which are quite informative and accurate:

Admittedly, my reference is more than 20 years old, but Martin Windrow, in Osprey Men-at-Arms #24 The Panzer Divisions says the 24th was formed from the 1st Cavalry Division on November 28, 1941, at Stablack, East Prussia, and that it trained in France from April thru June 1942, then went to Russia and its first rendezvous with destiny at Stalingrad.
Yours,
Paul

Hans,
Christoph and Hans are correct. The bible on German units in 19 volumes by Georg Tessin titled Verbände und Truppen der deutschen Wehrmacht und Waffen SS 1939-1945 states in Volume 4 that the 24. Panzer-Division was established on 28 November 1941 in Stablack/ Ostpreußen from the 1. Kavallerie-Division as noted by Paul and then in Volume 2 of Tessin it notes that in August 1941 the 1. Kav.-Div. was attached to XIII. Korps of the 2. Armee in HG Mitte in the Gomel, Kiew area as noted by Christoph.
So the 17. Inf-Div. data is correct and the OB is incorrect.
Best regards,
Ron Klages

Thank you gentlemen.
Christoph,
Yes I do amongst others use the book you refer to. As a matter of interest it has a picture of my father on the dust jacket and inside. Some of the content therefore is quite to my liking.

You maybe like it but as it is based on intelligence informations it is inaccurate. :-)Hans wrote:Thank you gentlemen.
