Waffen SS Welfare Organization

Post by Green Flagon »

Hello, all.

I'm an Emergency Physician in the UK. The other day I came across an elderly gentleman as a patient, who served in the Waffen SS during World War 2, and is still suffering greatly as a result of his experiences in a Soviet POW camp where he was held until the mid 1950's.

I've been trying to get him some help, both social and psychological, but without success. I've tried the Royal British Legion, but they can only help UK & Commonwealth servicemen, and also contacted the German embassy, who were quite interested until they found out he had been in the Waffen SS. They then rapidly lost interest.

I've been looking on the internet to try to find some sort of old comrades or welfare organization, but all the sites I've found seem to be of the more political / neo nazi type.

This is in fact the only board I've found which seems to be capable of intelligent debate!

Does anyone know if there is a German old comrades or welfare type organization which offers help to Waffen SS veterans? I'd like to put his family in contact with them, as he is married to a UK lady and has a family, but they are all at their wits end. He's lived in the UK since the 1950's, but all of the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder services here seem to be run by the Ministry of Defence, not the National Health Service, and as he has never served in the UK armed forces he is not eligible.

I'd really like to be able to help this old soldier, being ex-military myself. Does anyone have any names or addresses of organizations that I could put them in touch with?

Many thanks. This is a fascinating website. I wish I'd found it a while ago!

Best wishes,

That's not so easy. The HIAG existed only till 1992 and if the embassy is not interessted it would be hard.
PErhaps you can ask here for help: http://www.kameradenwerke.de/

I hope you can find help for the poor man, Flagon. I couldn't care less if he was Waffen-SS; the old man deserves a break in his latter years.

Yours,
Paul
